Bruce interest proves short-lived

Wed 27 May, 03:51 PM

Sunderland's interest in appointing Steve Bruce as their new manager has receded as Ellis Short's buy-out was confirmed.

On the day it was officially announced the Irish-American businessman is to take complete control of the club in which he bought a 30% stake last year, the Black Cats took a step back in their efforts to find a replacement for Ricky Sbragia.

Wearside woke to claims a compensation package, amounting to anywhere between £3million and £5million which would allow Bruce to leave current club Wigan, had already been agreed.

Sunderland were not commenting publicly on the suggestions but privately insisted they were nowhere near that stage and their stance hardened as sources in the north-west prematurely claimed the Black Cats had been given permission to talk to the former Manchester United defender.

It is understood contact between the two clubs had been made but that talks were not as advanced as had been suggested.

As a result, the Wearsiders, while not necessarily ruling out Bruce, are exploring alternatives having once again been inundated with applications for a job which has become even more attractive as a result of Short's decision to push through his plan to take over from the Drumaville consortium at the Stadium of Light.

  2. Hi guys,
congratulations on staying up this season.
Regarding Strachan. I think he would be a fabulous success at Sunderland. when he was with us (Celtic) he worked wonders with a non existent budget. Last 16 of champions league two years running proves he is a good manager and coach, 3 league championships out of 4 speaks for itself. i dont know how much money he would have at Sunderland but a conservative estimate of £20 million would set you up and secure your future for years to come. i believe that this would be a fabulous appointment.
if it happens, i wish gordon and sunderland the best of luck, you would get a great coach and he would get a fabulous team. good luck to both of you.
best of luck for next season.

  3. I disagree with the possible appointment Of Steve Bruce for the following reasons 1/ he only just escaped relegation last year 2/ he paid alot of money for mediocre players like Medo and the missing Egyptian Striker. 3/ he is not a charasmatic character who will attract big name quality players which is what we require.
4/ and possibly most important he is a Geordie and has his alliegence is north of the water.

I would much rather see Gordon Strachan At the helm of the club and he ,I beleive, is the man to bring long awaited success to our team.

  5. An eye for a good purchase? Palacios was a tip from Wenger. Bruce bought Clinton Morrison for £4.75 million and handed over Andy Johnson for £750,000 by way of part ex. He paid £4 million for Cameron Jerome, £4.5 million for Gary McSheffrey. His main skills lie in crucifying the English Language and appointing good right hand men in Black and Bowen.

  6. Sunderland don't do things fast. Got to get the right manager.

Bruce would be good as he knows the Premier League as well as anyone and has an eye for a good purchase.
