Future uncertain for Ashley and Shearer

Wed 27 May, 06:08 PM

Talks over Alan Shearer's future continued on Wednesday amid renewed speculation owner Mike Ashley could sell the club.

Shearer, who held lengthy discussions with managing director Derek Llambias on Tuesday, returned to the club's Darsley Park training headquarters this morning for a further meeting with the sportswear magnate as the Magpies attempted to thrash out a deal to make him their permanent boss.

They did so as it emerged that Keith Harris, chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce, had also travelled to the north-east on Tuesday. However, Harris insisted he had "categorically not" visited the region to talk to representatives of a locally-based consortium, and it is understood he is still waiting to hear from Ashley as to whether or not his services may be required.

Few hard facts were emerging from either Darsley Park or St James' as Tyneside continued to await news of a possible permanent appointment.

But as the existing squad members headed off to various parts of the globe not knowing what will await them on their return, local boy Steven Taylor was keeping his fingers crossed that Ashley and Shearer could reach an agreement.

He said: "The club means so much to him (Shearer). The fans love him, and he was hurt like we were about relegation.

"He has been unbelievable. The only one person who I think can take us back up is Alan. He has been fantastic to work with.

"Let's hope we get the chance to work with him again."

The Ashley regime have made no secret of the fact they want Shearer to take the job to which he was appointed for the final eight games of last season.

  1. heyup conolly/cameron,
you know ive already said it,get a top line manager with shearere at no 2.shearer on his own,is too big a job, managerial experience "zero".
once the clearout is complete there will not be much in the buy glory kitty, its the chance for newcastle to use that unused academy of theirs, home grown talent, and hopefuly passion for the club.
    what do you say?
    granny.

  3. 19.i said at the time sheperd should never have sold . never mind the do gooders who were sickened by his and halls actions on holiday [no doubt the ugly geordie women comment was an act of trying to get into apretty girls pants]at the end of the day for all his faults he was behind the world record signing of shearer and no one can deny he backed every manager with funds .he knows the area and what it means to fans so while he may not be perfect he is a hell of a lot more competent than ashley . if he hadnt left we would never have sacked big sam without a chance to prove himself and we certainly wouldnt be in the championship right now

I can recall the fans demonstrating to get rid of sheperd after he got rid of Bobby Robson (which i felt was a tad Harsh)
so I advise all fans to be very careful what you wish for as a new owner might do to your club what sheperd & ashley has done to the proud geordie fans They were in this together Freddie sheperd is no fool and he must have known ashley was a disaster waiting to happen but did he care not a jot he just feathered his own nest

  5. FAT VULTURE SHEPHERD IS HOVERING AROUND EYEING UP THE CARCASS OF ASHLEY'S NUFC. I'M NOT SAYING THAT SHEPHERD COULDN'T DO A BETTER JOB THAN ASHLEY, BUT DO WE REALLY WANT THIS DISCREDITED MAN BACK AT THE HELM OF OUR CLUB?

LET NOBODY FORGET THIS.. News of the World Exposé

In March 1998, Shepherd and Douglas Hall were the target of a News of the World exposé, led by the “Fake Sheikh” Mazher Mahmood. The pair, believing Mahmood to be a wealthy Arab prince trying to set up a business deal, were caught mocking the club's own supporters for spending extortionate amounts of money on merchandise, calling female supporters “dogs”, and mocking star striker Alan Shearer by calling him the "Mary Poppins of football", all while frequenting a brothel.

  6. Agree that we need to shift the deadwood and lets be honest there's enough of it and I really do hope Shearer stays on as manager because who the hell else is there. I really hope he sticks to his guns on what guarantees he wants because Ashley is against the wall be can't afford to rile the fans again and must be sheeting himself.

Wouldn't mind seeing a couple of the kids get a chance the likes of Carol and Edgar and let's face it they couldn't do any worse than the idiots we've been paying mega money to.

Ho! Ho! Just heard a rumour from a Mag (really hope its true) that Shearer was told that while he can have any money he raises from the sale of players to fund new transfer targets there is no new money. Ha! Ha! I guess thats why talks have stalled. So its back the Match of the Day for money-grabber Alan and down to League One for you lot (North east derbies with Hartlepool, unless they get promoted). Ho! Ho! It just gets better and better. Bet you wish you hadn't slagged off Big Sam now. Ha! Ha! Never mind FTM, looks like Agent Ashley is doing it all from within!!!!

  8. I think it will do us good having a season or two in the Championship. Alan (we hope) can get rid of the so called high earners who are only here for the money and buy some players who will take the Toon Army to their hearts and play as a team not an individual.
    Best of luck Alan

  10. John, you are so true: in fact, i'm already looking forward to next season!
Back to old favourites like Hillsborough and Loftus Road, (love that place), and a day out in Blackpool; and i am sure we'll recieve a better welcome than such as the disgraceful one we got at the likes of villa park. There will be a better atmosphere at SJP too, with away fans treating it as their biggest away-day of the season; and let's face it, the new squad of players, when it arrives, has got be better than the dross we've had to put up with the past 4 or 5 seasons. As you say, we're down (not out), so we may as well get used to it, and make the most of it (for one season only . . . . . .hopefully!!!!)..
Mind, it's gonna be tough, make no mistake about it but hey John, imagine, we'll even get to stand on the terraces!!!!!!

  13. cameron w, I think your right and the fact that we haven't moved on may suggest that their are issues. But I'll tell you what, we are down so next season we may aswell make the most of it. It will be great to visit places we haven't been to for a long time and fill their grounds and their fans and players are welcome to SJP so can't wait for next season. Hope it's only one but if not, haven't we been here before and you never know what's around the corner.

  14. Richard T must've been smoking something he shouldn't. Who care's if he worked for his money - the supporters work hard for their money (a hell of a lot less than Ashley's) and this is how they get treated - little to no commitment of money to the team - little to no commitment to managers and then he's got a few tricks in his locker to take money off everyone like the three year season ticket tie-in stuff - he's no idiot when it comes to business, but he is a fully fledged idiot when it comes to running a football club. Ok so we weren't brilliant before he came, but we were in a hell of better position than we've ever been since the London Mafia turned up. And if they're family - you should be ashamed of them - especially the reletive that went in to the club shop demanding to get cockney wan*er (don't quote me on the exact phrase) put on a shirt and then proceed to shout and swear when staff told her they couldn't put that on - then used the 'do you know who I am?' - sounds like the family are just as bad as he is.

Cameron W My Family ( Ashley) have had to work for their money no silver spoon treatment at all Get real the rot had set in long before M Ashley came a long with out his money you stay in the league would have been much more brief maybe you would have had no club at all.UTM

  16. Maybe Shearer is negotiating to buy the club, he can't afford it on his own, but I guess he could easily pull in a buy-out team with the reduced ammount of readies required to buy a pi55-poor team with a loyal support base stotting around the middle of the championship (er Div 2 in old money) looking forward to the grudge match with Preston Nob End.

  19. Oh what a mess!
I reckon Shearer's (rightly) asking for iron-clad assurances of a decent enough transfer kitty to remould the entire squad and ashley, as always, is refusing to part with any of the folding stuff.
    Will ashley never learn?
The product is the team; invest in the team man - for crying out loud, it's hardly rocket-science!!!!
How on earth this buffoon ever made a billion defies logic!

From cameron w, on Wed 27 May 6:18PM
  20. I think Shearer will succeed in management but it's asking a hell of a lot from a rookie manager to sort this mess out and it may just be too much for him. If he takes it he will need some good people around him for support.
