French rugby chase greatness against Wallabies

SYDNEY (AFP) - France have the incentive of pulling off a rare winning double over southern hemisphere powers New Zealand and Australia when they take on the Wallabies here on Saturday.

Les Bleus can lay claim to being the greatest French team to tour Australasia if they can add the scalp of the Wallabies to their win over the All Blacks.

The French beat New Zealand 27-22 win in Dunedin a fortnight ago and although they lost last weekend's clash in Wellington, they won the Dave Gallaher Trophy, decided on points for and against.

The French have only beaten the Wallabies four times in 18 internationals in Australia, with the last triumph (28-19) coming in 1990.

France will be trying to emulate England, who vanquished both the All Blacks and Wallabies on their 2003 tour down under.

But it will represent a supreme physical challenge for the French team, who are appearing in their third demanding Test match on successive weekends.

The Wallabies, who have been building after three handsome wins over the Barbarians and Italy, won all three encounters against France last year.

The fifth-ranked French can also overtake Australia on the IRB rankings and reach number three if they can beat the Wallabies by more than 15 points in Saturday's international.

Coach Marc Lievremont has attempted to freshen up his team by making seven changes from last week's 14-10 loss to New Zealand.

Wallabies' counterpart Robbie Deans has also revamped his starting lineup with nine changes from last week's experimental team that downed the much weaker Italy 34-12.

"Perhaps we will be better prepared because we have had two hard games but they (Australia) have been able to rotate their squad," Lievremont said.

"They had a number of players who didn't play (last Saturday). So maybe they will be fresher.

"I don't know what is better. We have some injuries already in the group, players who are tired and will have to play a third match, players not used to playing three matches in a row at that level."

Lievremont has reshuffled his backline with scrum-half Dimitri Yachvili and flyhalf Lionel Beauxis replacing Julien Dupuy and Francois Trinh-Duc.

Les Bleus will also be without lock Sebastien Chabal (calf) and injured trio Yannick Jauzion, Louis Picamoles and Thomas Domingo, while back Mathieu Bastareaud has returned home with facial injuries.

Wallabies' flyhalf Matt Giteau, who looms as a major attacking threat along with skipper Stirling Mortlock, said both teams were rotating their squads.

"They have obviously changed a few things, but I think they have the same rotation system as us," he said.

"They are trying to blood new players, create that depth. And the players they are bringing in have got experience.

"We are under no illusions. We always knew this game was going to be tough."
