Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce would love to bring Ruud van Nistelrooy to Ewood Park - but has ruled out a move for 'injury-prone' Michael Owen.
The Rovers boss is in desperate need of striking reinforcements after Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire both left this month.
He has immediately set his sights on an ambitious move for Van Nistelrooy, who is set to be one of several victims of Real Madrid's unprecedented spending spree.
Allardyce said: "The sort of salary he would be on at Real Madrid may be beyond us. But maybe he wants to come and play in England again and take less of a salary - then we'd be interested."
And, just as when he persuaded Nicolas Anelka to join former club Bolton, Allardyce sees no reason why a deal could not be done - assuming the ex-Manchester United frontman is willing to take a pay cut in exchange for regular football.
"Who'd have thought Bolton would get Nicolas Anelka? Nobody did. But I went out and did it," Allardyce said.
"It would be nice to do it with a Van Nistelrooy. It would be a major coup if I could pull it off."
Owen is another faded star available this summer, and will not command a transfer fee when he lapses out of contract with Newcastle. However, Allardyce is apparently not tempted to take a chance on a player he worked with previously at St James' Park.
"I just question the injury scenario," Allardyce said.
"I need a striker that's going to be available for 30 games next season. That's not happened for Michael over the last four years."

As for Owen (and I am...if you aint already guessed, a Newcastle supporter) anyone offer me 50p for him? He was @#$% when he came, @#$% while he was here and is still @#$% now he is leaving. Good riddance and I hope someone in the premier league buy's you. It will prove to everyone next season what an as*hole you really are. Money grabbing useless t w a t. Never any good since you left Liverpool!
*p r o s t i t u t e
Muppets? Lower league???? up the villa, How many seasons have you kept your mouth shut and hoped for a moment like this eh? Well guess what.... Sunderland are experts at coming up and going down... they have more experience than a thailand @#$%! You muppet
Yawn yawn friggin @#$% villa. I already explained. It changes at the start of next season, something you, as a blunderland fan, should be fully aware of! You have been there plenty of times!
who would want a player who spends the game wandering about on the 1/2 way line with his hands on his hips, watching the clock tick down so he can get back onto his PC to play poker ?,one of the worst bits of business any football team has ever done up their with old blue noses' aquisition of Veron
f..kthe villa....change the record yam yam!!
why are newcastle still on the premier league bit of yahoo. go away you lower league muppets.....
Oh my good god! The mackems know how to use capital letters! As I said in a previous post.... when god gave out heads, the Mackems thought he said sheds and asked for large wooden one's he he. Slappers??? I think not. What has a Mackem girl and a fridge freezer got in common??? They both drip when they are f**ked. LOL! 3 cheers for John Connolly and Cameron! Fighting the true Geordie corner everytime even with lots of personal abuse from the black t w a t s.
The scam that is football is finally dawning on the supporters, none of them are worth the salaries,or transfer fees. The price to attend a game is a RIP OFF,VOTE WITH YOUR FEET,and support non-league football. The fans at Rhyll will tell you how entertaining and exciting the game is at their level
Fragile World
impact, I think you've got it bad
CAMERON CONOLY NUFC SLAPPERS
ashleyliam2, the only people moaning on here are those like yourself, chill out man.
TO ALL YOU SKUNKS BARCODES FAT GOERDIE SCUM, MICKY OWEN NOT SO LONG AGO WAS A TOTAL SAINT WHEN HE FIRST JOINED YOU.
YOU GOT RID OF BIG SAM, GREAT, HE WOULD HAVE KEPT YOU UP, THANKS FOR THAT FROM ALL OF SAFC.
YOU LOT MOAN ABOUT ANYTHING WHEN ITS NOT GOING YOUR WAY.
AT LEAST WE, SUNDERLAND FANS GOT BEHIND OUR PLAYERS ON OUR UP AND DOWN YEARS. YOUR TEAM WAS A LOT BETTER ON PAPER THAN OURS, BUT YOU LOT SCREWED YOUR TEAM, AND MANAGERS, YOU EXPECT TO MUCH, YOU HAVE NEVER HAD IT, AND WILL NEVER GET IT, A TITLE. WE AS SUNDERLAND FANS NEVER EXPECTED IT AND WONT FOR A LONG TIME, BUT BOYS AND FAT GOERDIE SLAGS, YOUR TIME HAS COME....................... YOUR IN THE REAL WORLD NOW.
STOP MOANING FTM TWICE A DAY.
When Real were in poor form, Ruud was the only striker in their team consistently scoring. He got injured and suddenly that is forgotten?? Who have they bought that would make them want to sell him?
So far all I'm hearing about is midfielders unless Villa has signed?
cameron, well said mate
LEE .......Owen a hero against Argentina? WE LOST!!! there were no heroes on the pitch that day and they can all hang there heads in shame except Sol Campbel, whose injury time goal was ruled out, he was outstanding in that match. And as for Owen, of to the knackers yard for you me old mucker, dont worry though your horses will be joining you soon.
People aren't daft; just one look at owen's body language in those last few games for NUFC was enough to convince any potential suitors that this 'man' has no stomach for the fight, no committment and no loyalty to his pay-masters and the fans! The cardinal sin for any professional is to give less than 100%: michael owen, you are guilty as charged - i hope you rot!!!
I think this is just a little too abitious of Allardyce. He pulled off Anelka though, so Ruud may not be out of the question... that is, if he'll take the pay cut. Ruud is still a top-class player, and he should do very well back in the Premiership... where he'll actually get to play, unlike what will probably happen at Madrid. But I would much rather see him on a competative team like Tottenham, where he was also linked.
