Wimbledon - Brits: Seeds too good for Robson and Stoop

Eurosport - Sat, 27 Jun 21:12:00 2009

Laura Robson and Georgie Stoop crashed out of the women's doubles at Wimbledon with a 6-3 6-4 loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova and Amelie Mauresmo.

The British duo, handed a wildcard into the tournament, put up a brave fight but were ultimately over-powered by their more experienced opponents on a packed Court 12.

Stoop, in particular, was impressive as she frequently matched and even out-hit Kuznetsova from the baseline, but the 16th seeds sealed the first set at the third attempt when the 21-year-old netted a forehand.

The British pair struck back at the start of the second set, immediately breaking the Kuznetsova serve to race out to a 3-0 lead.

But Mauresmo and Kuznetsova battered an uncomfortable-looking Robson at the net to break back and draw level.

Robson, the youngest player on the court by six years, then handed her opponents a further break, by slapping down two double faults in one game, and Kuznetsova was able to serve out the match with ease.

With Jocelyn Rae and Melanie South also losing it ends British interest in the competition with the other four home pairings losing in round one.

But Jamie Delgado and Jonny Marray recorded a superb five set win to book their place in the last 16 of the men's doubles.

Delgado and Marray defeated Czech Republic's Frantisek Cermak and Slovakia's Michal Mertinak, the 13 seeds, 2-6 7-6(5) 6-7(4) 7-6(9) 6-2.

  3. It would have been utterly unreasonable to expect much in the way of results from Laura at this year's Wimbledon (apart from defending her junior title next week). This week was all about experience. Having taken a set off Hantuchova in the singles, winning her first round doubles match and trading blows with Kuznetsova and Mauresmo, she's certainly had plenty of that. Well done Laura and good luck next week.
