Roger Federer lost his first set of the tournament but still managed to conjure a comfortable 6-3 6-2 6-7 6-1 victory over Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber at Wimbledon.
The 27th seed was meant to provide a stern test for Federer after disposing of Novak Djokovic at the French Open last month but the gulf in class was immediate as the Swiss maestro opened up a one-set lead in just 37 minutes.
The second was in the bag 30 minutes later but the German rallied from 2-0 down in the third to take it to a tiebreak which he won with a wonderful angled backhand 7-5.
Federer snuffed out the rising threat by racing to a 3-0 lead in the fourth and finally booked a fourth-round berth with a thunderous forehand winner.
The five-times Wimbledon champion set up a repeat of the French Open final with Swedish 13th seed Robin Soderling, who beat Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 7-6(7) 6-4 6-4.
Ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France could find no solution to the problem of Ivo Karlovic's massive serve as the Croatian ran out a 7-6(5) 6-7(5) 7-5 7-6(5) winner on Court One.
Tsonga failed to create a single break point against the 2.08 metre player from Zagreb, who blasted 46 aces and has this week spectacularly broken a run of four successive first-round exits at the All England Club.
After sharing the first two sets with tiebreaks, Karlovic carved out the match's only break in the 12th game of the third set to give him the initiative and he clinched the fourth set breaker 7-5 with his final ace after two hours and 44 minutes.
He will next play seventh seed Fernando Verdasco, after the Spaniard recovered from a set down to beat compatriot and 32nd seed Nicolas Almagro 4-6 6-1 6-4 7-6(2).
Fourth seed Novak Djokovic made serene progress into the fourth round at Wimbledon with a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over American Mardy Fish.
The Serbian, who made a shock exit in round two 12 months ago, seems to be peaking at the right time and barely put a foot wrong in a match lasting just under two hours.
Djokovic, largely ignored so far amid all the hype over a possible Federer-Andy Murray final, fired an unreturnable serve to win the match then threw his wristbands into the crowd.
The 2008 Australian Open champion next faces Dudi Sela, who became the first Israeli to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam since Amos Mansdorf at the Australian Open in 1992.
Sela recorded the win of his career when he battled past Spain's 15th seed Tommy Robredo 7-6(8) 7-5 2-6 7-5.
Croatian 12th seed Marin Cilic was locked in an epic battle with 24th seed Tommy Haas when play was suspended at 9:36pm due to lack of light.
Haas took the first two sets before Cilic hit back to level the match, and play was eventually suspended with the score at 5-7 5-7 6-1 7-6(3) 6-6.
The winner of that clash will face either Russian 29th seed Igor Andreev or Italian Andreas Seppi, with that match also being suspended due to lack of light, with the Russian leading 6-1 7-6(5) 4-6 5-5.

Whatever you say Tippu! You, like many people, like to use words out of context in order to make people look stupid! All you have to do is look at how people like Nadal, Novak, Murray and every other tennis player looks up to him to see that they don't find him arrogant. You have not met the guy. They have. So it's up to them, not you, to judge his character. Plus, Roger does not rate murray the way he rates Nadal, Hewitt, Djokovic and others for obvious reasons. Murray has done nothing to earn it. He's won nothing of consequence. Not one Grand Slam to his name. It is obvious that Rafa, too, does not rate Murray for this reason.
Necothehut, thanks for the good comment (46). We need this kind of intelligent analysis in this forum. I believe it,s still along way to go for every players. Roger is brilliant on grass and undeniably a favourite to win, but he is not invincible. In tennis, it is very difficult sustain the high level of game. Roger has won so many matches because he is very good in this aspect. But, on their day, players like Leyton, Novak, Robin, Andy and Tommy are capable of beating any opponent, even Roger and Rafa. So, best man win!
Recently, I discovered a hot place – SeekTall Co m -- where many sexy tall singles who like sports and chatting there. I'm an open minded girl from UK, I also like discuss sports and love with tall guys on it.
I may be called a Federer hater but i have good reason. He pretends to be humble but the guy is arrogant as hell. I am also tired of seeing the press licking his balls all the time. Federer is a great player but truth is that he is a master of out psyching opponents.
Unfortunately for him a crop of players Novak, Andy Murray and Nadal have sussed out his mind games and the know how to take him on. There was also G Canas of Argentina who also had a good record against Federer.
Federer has been beaten black and blue by Andy but he never gives the guy any credit. If he does it is always mealy mouth. Like last time he said Andy only beat him because he was injured.
The truth is Federer only beat Andy in US Open final because he had just beaten Nadal over 2 days while Fed was fresh as a daisy.
Same thing happened in Madrid masters where Novak and Nadal fought themselves to standstill only for Federer to benefit. He is never gracious in victory only arrogance. This is the same Federer who said drop shots is sneaky and only for tired players when Andy beat him, then he has now changed and started using drop shots all over the place. Hypocrite.
federer is nadals beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaattch
federer is having gay sex with his tennis racquet
federer is w a nk
Poor Federer! It seems that even with his 14 grand slams, his rare talent and great sportsmanship and control, he still can't win the respect of a few idiots on yahoo forums! All he does is play and if he hammers his opponent so be it! I mean would you rather he sat back and made a show of it? That would be a lack of respect to the other players! Good christ people!
I am just delighted that Roger has found his winning mentality again and to all you ppl saying that it is boring watching federer win, then simply dnt watch him then, because he is a genius at work simply doing what he was born to do, win slams - in his own way, feds 4 the final.
Firstly id like to congratulate Tommy Haas and Marin Cillic, what a great game of tennis, may the best man win tommorow. Secondly, the federer game was pretty boring, Fed did what he had to do but i dont think he played that well to be honest.. If Kohlschreiber could of just held his serve in the fourth set, he could of borke fed..
Murray tommorow.. should win that. Never heard of the other player
Bina I am so jealous. I missed that match as had to go out. Seems it was nailbiting. Good luck Tommy!
ralph i totally agree. As much as Fed is mindblowingly brilliant, it is boring to watch his opponents wilt before him. I hope that one of them - ANY OF THEM I DON'T CARE WHO! - knocks back a few pints or takes something before going on court and gives us a real match to watch in the absence of one Senor Nadal. I hope desperately that it's not going to be a boring one sided final.

HAAS HAAS HAAS a unbelivable match.. he cames back two times and safe two match points in the eleventh game of the fifth set... well done ... really dramatic and epic match... i thought i died it was too dramatic for me^^... go Tommy you are the best.. but cilic is so taff.. but you will make it^^
Ray V where did you get your info from. Fed beat Karlovic 8 times while Karlovic beat him once last year NOT in straight sets but 764676 and only cos Fed wasn't well. STOP HATING THE GENIUS!!!
Hey Stine and to swingers like peri, stephen and justi. If you think u know enough tennis u talk. Grass is d surface for big serves n volley. This is d primary reason why fed and sampras dominated in wimbly. Feds excelent baseline game made him more difficult to defeat. If u dance to feds music which is playing him behind d baseline u will find urself dance out of tune. Nadal won d duel last year coz his baseline game is a little superior than feds. Since nadal is not in picture no one is capable of beating fed since d majority u see today r baseliners. If karlovic, Haas which r both decent volleyers too will stick to a game plan of serve n volley or d chip n charge (by opportunity) they will a big chance.
Mike loves getting F****D by Nadal!!! jealous bent C***T!!!
Cathrenehume for your info Cilic hasn't won yet. And Federer's game was joyous to watch as always!!! you must be one of them haters that have nothing better to do than write c**p!!!
Attaha, I agree with you Federer is killing men's tennis. It's time for him to go.
Remember all the great men's tennis players? Lew Hoad, Rod Laver, Roche, Conners, Bjorg, Sampras, MacEnroe, Agassi, Becker. Not one of them had the need for fancy jackets or cardigans and long trousers are just too ridiculous for words.
Recently read some comments about the H2H games between Federer and Murray (2-6). Most of the posters didn't think it'd affect Fed too much in an eventual final between them, mainly due to the fact that it's Wimbledon and that Fed is very very experienced on GS generally, especially if Murray isn't able to take the lead. Saying that, I don't want to play the fortuneteller, there's long long way to the final for both of them. Fed has some tough opponents ahead as previous comments say and Murray will face either Roddick or Hewitt who seems to be in good shape again. Ypu never know.
However, Fed's record against Soderling is much more conclusive, being 10-0. I liked the way Robin performed on RG (besides the first set of the final, when he was clearly under stress) but don't think he has the right weapons against Federer. Surely Soderling won't feel under such pressure as in the RG final and will want to beat Fed for first time more than anything else, but something tells me that the Swiss knows quite well what to do against this opponent. In RG Fed successfully put a lot of pressure on Sodelring's backhand which is good but not his best shot. Time will tell, fingers crossed for an exciting game with Soderling playing the best he can all the time.
