Wimbledon - Reed: Novak not quite there

Eurosport - Sat, 27 Jun 21:00:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo! blogger Simon Reed believes Novak Djokovic is not a threat to Roger Federer at Wimbledon on current form.

TENNIS 2009 Wimbledon Novak Djokovic - 0

On the face of things Djokovic did well today, he had a straight sets victory over Mardy Fish and played some decent tennis.

But be aware of false prophets.

Fish is someone who makes people look good and that is exactly what he did to Djokovic today. He gave Novak a good workout, but that is all.

Novak is no doubt on the way up, but he is nowhere near the form which saw him win the Australian Open in 2008, and his game is well short of being able to challenge for this tournament.

Even if he was playing that great, he still has to get past Roger Federer who had a relatively easy time today.

Let us take nothing away from Philipp Kohlschreiber though, he played a magnificent set of tennis and it is something that he can do every now and then. I have been tipping him to become an elite player for a long time, because he certainly has the game, and on his day he is a top five player.

I was talking to Boris Becker about Kohlschreiber, and we both agreed that he seems to have a bit of a mental block when he gets into a tight match and needs to be more ruthless. We saw that today when he dropped the fourth set 6-1 after battling so well in the third.

On the women's side of things I saw Victoria Azarenka defeat Sorana Cirstea 7-6 6-3.

I am very impressed with Azarenka, she may not be someone who people would be immediately drawn to, what with her shrieking and harsh scowl, but she certainly has the game to be a match for anyone. Her form in the second set in particular was superb.

She has a date with Nadia Petrova in the next round and that will not be match that too many people will want to pay to see, but it will be very interesting.

As for Saturday, I will have a keen eye on the Sabine Lisicki-Svetlana Kuznetsova match. Lisicki is a player I have been tipping for a while and I think she could well cause an upset against the Russian.

The centre court crowd will be looking forward to seeing the two Andys, Roddick and Murray, in action. I cannot see their matches being too close though, they seem to be destined to meet each other in the semi-finals, with Murray in particular having a dream route to that stage.

    Andy M. = 0 GS

    End of story.....

  3. no favourite surfaces for Nole, all the same, just needs time to adapt
at the end all HIGHEST class players come to that point
    my opinion

  4. Everyone should just ignore Simon Reed's comments because it is becoming obvious that his judgment is clouded by his homosexual love for refridgerator-head murray! If he was not so emotionally attached he might have realized that by undermining Djoko's ability on the court he is only playing into his hands (since Novak prefers to be the underdog). Nonetheless, I'm sure murray's butt-buddy will continue to persevere in delivering balanced, objective journalism to Eurosport users.

  5. Yo -- no. 92! Mr Reed said nothing in this blog, which talked up Murray in any particular way, so please leave out undeserved criticism! Spot no. 90, spot on Mr Reed on calling 3 big matches right today, esp. the Lisicki result. Kudos.

  6. Whatever Reed as usual Murray is gods gift to tennis blah, blah, blah. I remind you all that Reed is the person who after last years Wimbledon final said that Federer would never reach another Grand Slam final, and since then he has never failed to do so.

  7. A long way to go for all of them. One surprise more, Gonzo is out, J.C.Fererro beat him. What is next?

  8. Oh my... why are so many people against Simon Reed? Is it because one of two people dislike him so the rest follow? This article makes full sense! Djokovic played good against Fish but is not at his Australian Open 2008 form! Therefor its unlikley he will beat Federer. Spot on Reed.

  10. faeelisabethc: it might be boring for you but I suppose you are not considering yourselves as a Fed fan. For millions of Federer fans it is not at all boring!
His game is so elegant and such a pleasure to watch! And not only Federer fans are saying that!!!

  11. Okay okay okay!!! fed is the greatest we know! but I am a bit sick of it especially when the man is a little too full of himself. (federer I mean), and all his worshippers, I cannot think of anything more boring than Federer dominating again. If it wasn't for the likes of Nadal who I hope makes a decent comeback bless him, tennis would have been routine, Federer might like it but for us fans its just boring!!! Djokovic has great movement on the court and I love to watch him, can he be great? who knows? Murray too I hope will continue to challenge Federer but this year @ Wimbledon maybe a bit much to ask and thats if he gets there (in the final I mean). Players like Nadal have made tennis sooo much more exciting! Federer is a great player but hardly has the pizzas of an Nadal! Each to there own of course!

  14. Ivanajaa: Reed provokes responses on both intellectual and emotional levels. Yahoo Eurosport UK wants high ratings. Yahoo is an American-gone-worldwide platform. It has the lamest USA tennis website on the net. One of the reasons is that it has this non-contentious, boring blogger who seems to be absent even when he's present, if you get my meaning. We can justifiably deplore Simon Reed but he "provokes" anything and anyone animal, mineral, or gaseous to comments, vomit, or be "creative" in the Yahoo Eurosport UK tennis columns, thus skyrocketing Yahoo's ratings and making "beau coup bucks" (American English for greedy-gut money from advertisers). So, hate Reed all you want, but we yank tennis fans are thrilled to cross The Pond and join your curses of The Reed. So, rave on, but celebrate the agony and the ecstasy of being able to participate in lively/maddening whatever comments. Cheers!

  15. "But he is starting to show a few cracks in my view. Losing concentration a bit. Hence the reason he lost a set today."
    proof?

From Hans G, on Sun 28 Jun 12:25AM
  16. "Shame on you Reed. Why dont you write of Murray the same stila you write of Djokovic! English arogant bully."
because murray is a lot better

From Hans G, on Sun 28 Jun 12:23AM
  17. "But when he reaches Federer (in case Federer passes Karlovic, who's a terribly heavy to win against on grass), then we'll see a real Novak. And when it happenes... No one, even Roger, can swear to win against Serb."
Oh, thats brilliant. Then you can get about 5 times the money for a 100% chance to win. You must be so happy, you will be so sick rich. Tell me, how did you find this secret out? Or I guess you better keep quiet, if you spill your secret the odds makers will make djok huge favourite for wimbledon, and give 100 times the money on Fed in a meeting between the two.

From Hans G, on Sun 28 Jun 12:23AM
  18. "Azarenka is a useful player and if watched on TV without sound she plays well but she will be no match for Nadia Petrova on a good day."
what no match. Shes a big favourite.

From Hans G, on Sun 28 Jun 12:16AM
  19. This guy Simon Reed is someone with so much tennis knowledge that he predicted Murray to win Austalian, Wimbledon and US open and Nadal to win Roland Garros in an article earlier the year. That says it all.
