World Cup 2010 - England blunder ref was banned

Sun, 27 Jun 18:51:00 2010

The referee of England’s 4-1 defeat to Germany has a chequered history and missed the 2002 World Cup after he was banned in his homeland for irregularities.

Jorge Larrionda who, along with assistant Mauricio Espinosa, missed a clear goal by Frank Lampard that would have made it 2-2 in the second-round tie, was suspended in his native Uruguay for six months for "irregularities", leading FIFA to exclude him from their list for the 2002 finals in Japan and South Korea.

After the latest blunder, Larrionda and his assistants were given police protection after the match in Bloemfontein due to fears for their safety.

England were angered after Lampard’s 38th-minute shot was not deemed a goal despite good positioning for both the referee and his assistant - the ball hit the underside of the crossbar and clearly bounced a yard behind Germany keeper Manuel Neuer’s line.

A spokesman for the South African Police Service said officers would ensure no member of the public would be able to get close to Larrionda and assistants Espinosa and Pablo Fandino.

Spokesman Vishnu Naidoo said: "The officials will be protected by a team of elite close protection officers. Nobody will be allowed to get anywhere near them.

"The level of security around them remains unchanged from previous matches but the officers will be briefed to be on special alert for any trouble.

"Obviously after there could be a degree of discontent among some fans but the safety of the officials will be ensured."

Larrionda, 42, has also been in hot water after he failed to spot a clear goal by Brazil in a 2006 World Cup qualifier against Colombia: in an almost identical situation to Lampard’s, Adriano’s header rebounded off the crossbar, crossed the goal line but was not given.

At this World Cup Larrionda had earlier been the target of Serbian criticism for failing to award a late penalty when Nemanja Vidic's header appeared to strike Australia’s Tim Cahill on the arm in their final Group D game - a win would have sent the Serbs through.

  1. i think blatter and plattini don't want new (old) technology because they need to fix games sometime,so if a camera decided if a goal stood and proved it was in, or indeed not in,they could not fix games by paying some cheap ref to make sure the result was right..
those 2 corrupt scumbags need to be kicked out and some guys with morals, like beckenbaur, pele, charlton or maybe even cruyff.

  2. Why oh why do we have foreigners as our manager, give the job to a Englishman who understands the language, I think Beckham would make a fine manager, he is young enough to understand the modern game he has the respect of the players, also come on why keep playing the same losers every time surely there are more first class and world class players to take over from the bunch of losers we keep playing at the moment only ones worth a place are ashley cole gerrard and lampard

  4. England, what a pile of pants!! Running around like headless chickens. i think to play in a world cup you have to have intelligence, fittness. GERMANY has the intelligence and fittness. the likes of roony who has no brains but thinks he has because he gets paid quite alot of money; Infact i would bet the IQ of all the English Football team, if tested , would be 12

  6. The LAMEST excuse had to be capello saying the players were tired. From what? earning so much cash? Im tired of hearing these excuses. If you cant put up a competetive team at the world cup dont blame everything else. Next time why dont you actually put some thought into picking the correct coach (not a fancy italian who the press has treated like royalty thus far, and some players who actually want The to play for your country. problem is also your media. They hyped a good coach into a great coach. they hype good players into world beaters (BASED ON WHAT MAN???? YOU GUYS LAST WON IN 1966. THATS OVER FORTY YEARS. And yet the same deluded media manages to trash on brazil calling them boring because they have become smarter and actually win again. WHAT HAVE YOU, ENGLAND, CONTRIBUTED TO THE WORLD CUP EXCEPT HYSTERIA, JINGOISM AND HYPE? NOTHING. Not even good football. Yet your english media tell you every 4 years you are world beaters. why? Nobody else buys into it, why do the english public? Maybe if you people actually used your heads instead of your media you might do a better job of picking the right coach and players (by voicing your opinions) for england next time who might finally do you people proud.

  8. How typical of CORRUPT FIFA AND BALL-LESS UEFA. Be lame the ref, ake him a scapegoat and turn the spotlight away from VIDEO TECHNOLOGY. The credibility of the sport is at stake and FIFA are sticking on band aids where so much more is needed. Much like BP:) Fifa (and uefa maybe) dislike video tech because it will take away their power to "control" games through their "human" error refs.

  9. i think is time the english agree that they dont know anything, all these years they have been parading them selves champion in everything, look the world is wise now this time everyone know who is good at what ok. rony is over rated by the british media and so many of those guys.we are all wife now you can decieve us any more. this is what you get when you take all the time to lean to brag. there are so many english people black or white that can play good football they are not selected because they are not the media favorite. well i get every one will lean from this. loosing is not all about ref: they are not just good enough, why are you guys always justify failure just accept it. people are now wife all those deception dont work anymore. just peace of advice.
    peace.

  10. "so why is this guy still a ref ?"

Becauase FIFA and Sepp Blatter are corrupt, plain and simple.

That is why they resist goal line technology. They must want the ref to be able to make unfair or biased decisions when they are wrong.

What good reason is there for not wanting technology that can make cheating a thing of the past?

  11. How long will FIFA stay mired in the 20th century? With an ever increasing stake each year, it is urgent that FIFA adopt video replay. Every major sport in the world has adopted some form of video assistance. If there was any sport that needed it sooner than everyone else, it's football.

All this controversy over blown calls, missed calls, cheating & crooked referees, death threats, riots, police protection for lousy referees and the costs associated with each will ALL go away with video replay. All the paying public want is a fair and just game - this should include offsides, goals and the blatent diving that spoils what should be the greatest sport on earth.

The paying public are not dumb @#$% sheep like they were in the 30's or 40's when FIFA was concocted. They are much more sophisticated and know when there is injustice (on and off the field). We are fed up with draconian executive management and demand action.

  12. for gods sake how long is this going to go on happening.
football is no longer a sport, its a multi billion pound business. peoples lives and jobs depend on it as well as the worlds economies. someone start an online campaign to out this self apinionated idiot who says no to goal line technology.
we have been debating this for years and years, it will not hinder the game at all. it will however only improve the flow and at the end of the day, make things right, as it should be. we must move on from this but lets take the right path too. it puts right the terrible terrible mistakes these incompetent officials keep on making. how on earth can that be bad for the game, it works in every other so called sport.
remember its either right or wrong. this will put right all the wrongs. lets just get on with it.

  13. I cannot understand how FIFA can be dictated to by Blatter surely there is a committee at their meetings who have enough backbone to out- vote him on the matter of technology I watched a bit of Wimbledon today and Federer queried a line call it was resolved in 15 seconds FIFA want to get with it or is their a hidden agenda?
Both branches of Rugby have it Cricket and Tennis have it as well .Come on FIFA get your finger out

  14. I am not a great professional fan or critic for football. To be honest, there was no sport spirit, morale and quality of performance found yesterdfay match- Eng- Germany. I used ot be so proud of them being one of the best paid players in the world. Seem to have thing to impress overall. I am not expecting the team to win, but alt least can expect the pride for being good players! So disappointed! If I had been a subscribed football club memmber, I would ask for my refund!

  16. i agree with the comment made by Fabio after the game. if it wasn't for such a horrible call on that goal, england would have performed better. after all, it was clear to me that they were picking up momentum. i mean...come on! germany was leading with 1, england came up behind them with a goal within minuets. when germany got goal 2, Lampard's GOAL was number 2 shortly thereafter. with a bad call like that on a magnificent goal, that will play in the back of your mind for the remainder of the match, it will get to you and that's what happened to England yesterday.

for the german fans, even if you did win the match...the score in all actuality was 2-4 not 1-4. you pride yourselves on 1 goal more than you should. for that, i hope you guys get dealt with by argentina and hopefully those refs won't be so kind to you.
