Cup glory for Celtic

Mon 27 Jul, 04:07 PM

Celtic's second-string side warmed up for this week's Champions League qualifier by defeating Tottenham 2-0 in the Wembley Cup and highlighting the problems facing Harry Redknapp.

Victory, courtesy of goals by Chris Killen and Georgios Samaras, means Tony Mowbray's men won the friendly tournament ahead of Wednesday's clash against Dinamo Moscow and they have still not conceded a goal in four pre-season matches.

Spurs boss Redknapp, who has watched his side getting outplayed by two reserve sides during the tournament, has major worries at the heart of his defence as Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson are sidelined, leaving no recognised centre-back.

It only took Celtic eight minutes to expose Spurs' fragile defence. Paul Caddis shifted past Benoit Assou-Ekotto on the right and whipped in a cross, with Killen getting in front of Chimbonda to plant his header past Heurelho Gomes.

Frenchman Dorian Dervite was fault for the second goal, courtesy of Samaras five minutes before the break.

Samaras was in his own half when he poked the ball past the 21-year-old and there was plenty of time to catch the Greece international, who was hardly known for his pace while at Manchester City for two years.

Instead, Samaras carried the ball into the penalty and executed a precise finish across Gomes.

In the day's other game in the London tournament, Barcelona beat Al Ahly 4-1 with Lionel Messi making a cameo appearance.

  1. 57 - Ryan, I hate being the one to "burst your bubble", but Setanta went into administration. Sorry to say, but your chances of being a pundit on there are now ZILCH! And Sky already have an arse-hole in the shape of Andy Gray, so they don't really need any more arse-holes. Back to the day job for you I'm afraid, young man!!

  7. Lysdexic... This wullie Sam comes oan, spouts about 2 comments at most and then never answers or comments to our comments... He's either unable to read most of the more intelligent comments, or he's a freakin' Tory/Labour/Liberal MP and like all them, ignores any concensus of opinion against anyway.
I'm still dying to know what team he supports as he never tells us as he's too scared to get a roasting about how pish they are...

  9. Guys, I didn’t mean to take the lid off Pandora’s Box here, or open up political debate, that is not my style. Basically I was having a go at one individual who, via his odious and asinine comments, and not just today, demonstrated once again that he has just no respect for the bounds of decency. It takes a bit to rattle my cage, but like a lot of you out there, with me it is so far, and no further.
Just for you ENGLISH SAM, and indeed any of you bile spouting cretins out there, I don’t know the level of your intelligence, but I have a good idea of how foolish you can be, I strongly suggest that you get a post-it note with the word ‘respect’ written on it and stick it to your monitor and when you get the urge to type your usual kak, take a wee second to read the note. If you have written it, there’s a chance that you just might heed it!

  13. Great Comments from Ginger and Arkaig and Lys there... You Sam are a complete jib stain... I watched the whole game live and the only chant I heard anything remotely to do with Ireland was the Amhrán na bhfiann (In English) and 'The Roll of Honour', which is about the Hunger Strikers... Nothing was mentioned about terrorism of any kind... If you are going to have a go that we are idolising Terrorists that went on the Hunger Strikes, then that is your prerogative and probably understandable in that you are English; But then again, the English sent in their troops into that country, and to lots of other countries - The vast majority of which was unlawful in many peoples' eyes... And, is it not the English and, even more sickeningly, the Anglican Church, who have all these pomp and circumstance funerals for soldiers who have been killed, who are basically trying to do the same to smaller countries and 'lesser' people the World over... So don't get on your high white horse condemning shyte that the English have done since time immemorial to a fine art.

  15. ENGLISH SAM - have you ever stopped to think why the various factions of Irish Republicanism bombed and maimed mainland Britain (England, including, but not exclusively London)? Let me educate you.. It was done to make the British governments sit up and take notice that British interference in Ireland was neither wanted, or welcomed. They tried reason.. They tried resistance (Easter 1916), and finally decided on a bombing campaign. Notice how, once the Good Friday agreement was signed, the IRA set about decommissioning their weapons under the watchful eye of Senator George Mitchell, and only recently, the Loyalist Paramilitaries are doing likewise? The British government finally sat up and took stock of their involvement in Irish affairs, and brokered a peace deal, WITHOUT APPEASEMENT! If only the British would stop interfering in other countries, we'd see a lot less bloodshed in other places, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. How many innocent people died in the name of British Colonialism, eh?
