International Football - Drastic measures as Wembley goes plastic

Eurosport - Tue, 27 Jul 13:55:00 2010

Wembley Stadium has gone plastic in the latest attempt to sort out its shocking pitch.

The FA shelled out £750 million on the showpiece rebuild of England’s national stadium that was completed in 2007.

But a combination of the unusual Wembley micro-climate and additional use as a concert venue has left the pitch resembling a Sunday League playing surface.

England boss Fabio Capello and Chelsea captain John Terry have complained about the "embarrassing" pitch, while Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp called it a "disgrace" after their FA Cup semi-final loss to Portsmouth.

Constant turf re-lays - 11 times so far - have had little effect, so now the FA is looking beyond simply re-laying turf, with a £250,000 grass-plastic composite surface to be grown from scratch on the pitch.

"The pitch is at the heart of the stadium and football is our number one priority," Roger Maslin, managing director of Wembley National Stadium, said. "However, Wembley is a multi-use venue and developing our event calendar with a range of football, rugby, sports and entertainment events is key to the success of our business plan.

"The crucial balance for us is to maintain a good quality playing surface for football, whilst at the same time fulfilling our business plan commitments and maintaining our heritage as a multi-event venue."

Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool all have a mix of real and artificial grass in their playing surfaces.

Manufacturers Desso say plastic grass is weaved in between the natural grass to create a more solid pitch with better drainage and "playing comfort".

The first match on the new Wembley pitch will be the Community Shield between Chelsea and Manchester United on August 8, before England's friendly against Hungary three days later.

There will be no non-football events held there until a Muse gig in September.

FA chiefs need to show they can manage the Wembley pitch in time for the 2018 World Cup vote in December, with fears that continued problems would harm England’s bid.

  1. Please correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought the community shiled match was between the winners of the Premier league and the F A Cup. Eurosport are telling me that the game will be between Chelsea and Man Utd. on August 8th. I think a trip to the bookies is urgently needed. Hey Eurosport, what are the numbers for the lottery that week?

  2. Why did they even "rebuild" Wembley anyway? They just totally ruined it.

  3. I just can not believe the trouble that wembley has such a poor record with the turf used. You never hear of premiership or lower teams having to re-lay there turfs after only a few games. The other joke is how much the fa or us as supporters are having to pay for each time the pitch is re-layed. I think it only fair that due to the pitch quality being so poor the suppliers should be paying for the replacement turf.

  4. Judging by their recent dismal display in the world cup finals I would imagine that the England v Hungary game should be also classed as a non football event - or at least the England side they are a bunch of overpaid, useless tossers!!

  5. How come the Millenium Stadium never had this PROBLEM!

So where are they playing the Rugby League challenge cup final in August then? Come on yahoo get your facts right!

  7. I worked at old stadium and we had lots of diffrent events there rugby american football wrestling even stun riders and the pitch held its own, in my opinion whats gone wrong is that the care and love the pitch had was all the staff that worked there wembley got gready so it sold us out and mainly you wembley use to be a for hire venue never was it owned by the FA it was owned by wembley plc which included stadium, arena, conferance center, and exhibtion halls. it should be shut down new pitch layed and new staff who no how to look after a peace of grass as a valuble asset the country can be proud off and come on england lets show the world we still have the one stadium every one wants to play on john p k ex security wcc

  8. Laying a pitch composed of a mixture of Plastic & Natural Grass, is no problem for the experts!
The problem will be if they hire in a 'Cheapy - Cheapy' Company to do the laying, then it's back to Square One!!!!
The other possible problem will be if they do not train the Groundsmen the correct way to set the cutting blades, & how to actually cut this turf; then again you will be back to Square One yet again!!!! Remember Plastic Grass, does not grow, so if the Cutting Blades are set incorrectly, then you might as well move all the matches out to the Victoria Stadium in Gibraltar; where there is no grass what so ever!!! It's a Dried Mud & Gravil Pitch, however they do play successful football out there; the 'Mega Stars' do not have to take a dive & pretend to be injured, it's simply a case of ............ if you fall wrongly, then you will have skin injuries .......... but having said this, if the players play correctly & fairly, there is not only NO INJURIES, but you get to watch a really good game of Football!!!!

  10. It's high time The FA dropped Wembley for England games and put the show back on the road, as when Wembley was out of action. The team belongs to all of us, not just London and well heeled visitors. After all, the FA are praising the regional grounds in the 2018 bid. Keep Wembley for the Cup Finals etc or better still, get shot of it. It's a mill-stone.

  13. it has to be a multi purpose stadim with non football events cos thats how things make money!!! also they shouldve put a roof on the @#$% thing!! or got a pitch that rolls out of the stadium to get the sunlight..*see University of Arizona Stadium in America* :D

    From stuart.sumthing, on Wed 28 Jul 1:39
  14. for all those muppets who continue to ask for the stadium to only be used for football.....please stop it. the stadium has to fund itself and also begin to pay back the money that was needed to create it in the first place. they cannot do that by only holding england matches.

  15. Desso Pitches are world renowned so this time at last they FA may be doing the right thing, the Emirates, Eatslands and Anfield aren't bad pitches they are all the same as this opne will be

  16. Everything the FA does is a massive joke, they are a worldwide joke, no wonder we have not got the world cup bid

Now we have wembley, a joke of a stadium, cost two thirds what it should have done, a roof that they cannot close, a pitch that will always be a problem because of the silly roof design

Just like the dome was Labours tombstone, Wembley will be the FAs

And cost us any world cup bid in our lifetimes

Wembley shows how bad the FA are, just like the England team

  18. I've got a few rolls of old carpet in me shed if anyone from wembley is interested. It's a few years old and it smells of catpiss but it's bound to be better than what they're using.

  19. as a swindon fan who lost at wembley to millwall and saw our main striker charlie austin miss a sitter because of a bad bobble when clean through i think the pitch was a total disgrace and you see better on sunday mornings down the park, the FA are a shambles who i wouldnt trust to run an under 5s game let alone the national game, government should step in and sort it out from top to bottom
