Cardiff boss Dave Jones insists there is more to come from his side after Tuesday night's 2-1 Carling Cup victory over MK Dons at Ninian Park.A second penalty in three days on the stroke of half-time by Ross McCormack and a 58th minute free-kick from Peter Whittingham proved just enough to put the Bluebirds into round three.
A header from Sean O'Hanlon in the 75th minute gave City some anxious moments but they fully deserved their victory to remain unbeaten.
"We're not firing on all cylinders but with Ross McCormack working his socks off and taking his goal-scoring record to five in five games, we are doing all right at the moment," said Jones.
"We have players here who need time to bed in and Eddie Johnson is one of those, but we will soon see the best of him.
"The squad has been tested, especially with the three injuries in the first half, but we like to give our youngsters a chance and I am pleased that Aaron Morris was given an opportunity tonight."
The Bluebirds had lost both full-backs through injury by the 20th minute and after a dull opening period, the first real strike on goal did not arrive until the 25th minute when Whittingham flashed a shot just wide of the Dons' goal.
The game exploded in the 41st minute with Johnson's only real contribution in the game.
He met a cross from Joe Ledley and his shot was turned onto the crossbar by former Swansea goalkeeper Willy Gueret in the visitors' goal. The Dons failed to clear and when Ricci Scimeca raced into the area he was brought down by Drissa Diallo.
There was a lengthy delay while Scimeca was treated before being stretchered off the field, but it made no difference to McCormack who drilled the spot-kick into the net to give City the half-time lead.
In the 58th minute Whittingham doubled the score when he curled a 30-yard free-kick into the net before Gueret could move.
The Bluebirds seemed to be on top but just as in Saturday's league match when they let two goals slip, the Dons fought back and out of the blue O'Hanlon rose high to meet a free-kick and power a header into the net to reduce the deficit.
The Dons pressed forward in an attempt to equalise but the Bluebirds held firm.
"I am very proud of my team as they put up a great performance against a side from a higher division," said Dons boss Roberto Di Matteo.
"We conceded from two set pieces but despite that we defended well. We expected them to be better than us but generally I was very satisfied with the way we played.
"We were missing one or two first-team players but it gave me the chance to see how others perform and that was worthwhile."
