LPGA: Players must speak English

Eurosport - Wed, 27 Aug 15:07:00 2008

The world's top women golfers will be required to speak English from 2009 under new rules introduced by the LPGA Tour.

"We're focusing on the fact that we're in the sports entertainment business and we have to interact with fans and sponsors," LPGA deputy commissioner Libba Galloway told USA Today.

"This is not meant to be punitive in any way. There are very few players who don't speak English.

"We don't think suspensions will happen but if they do we're not going to say, 'Boom, go home and try again next year'," she added. "We'll work with them on identifying areas for improvement."

There are 121 international players from 26 countries on the United States-based LPGA Tour, including 45 from South Korea alone.

Mexican Lorena Ochoa tops the LPGA's 2008 money list with Taiwan's Yani Tseng fourth and young South Korean Park Inbee ranked fifth.

The golfweek.com website said the South Korean players were told at a mandatory meeting on August 20 at the Safeway Classic that from 2009 all players who have been on the Tour for two years must pass an oral English test.

Galloway said the "measurement time" would be at the end of 2009 and players who fell short would be provided with resources such as tutoring.

Leading Korean golfer Pak Se-ri supported the stance.

"We agree we should speak some English," she told Golf Week. "We play so good overall. When you win, you should give your speech in English.

"Mostly what comes out is nerves. Totally different language in front of camera. You're excited and not thinking in English," she added.

  1. The LPGA has set back women one hundred years. They reasoned that this is about marketing and so forth but isn't the same reasoning that women should never be CEO because they lack logic and think with their emotions. How come baseball, basketball and football which are all American sports don't have the same requirements. If I recall right there are players in those sports that don't speak English very well. If only those American elite golf athletes quit be so weak and are able to compete in golf with their Asian counterparts then the rule would never be required. Finally is it is about marketing the LPGA they should have put in models who wear skimpy outfits to play. The ratings and sponsorship will go up. Because they are saying that good golfing is not very important but the pro-am part, then the models would boost the whole experience. Also the golf commissioner should look better because it would help with clients. She could persuade people better.

In the future other sports should put in that same requirements when the elite athletes

  3. I agree totally with the LPGA on this , all of these girls take up golf from a very young age in South Korea because they have seen the impact that Se-Ri-Pak ang Grace Park have had on that stage. They also see it as a passport to riches , so i actually feel quite embarrassed when i see non speaking English Golfers squirm in front of the cameras after a win , i also think that it is part of their commitment as pro,s to talk to the press and the fans ,who - after all give them their career(no TV = no prizemoney =no bother coming to America)They need to give something back. Please guys don,t think of me as a xenophobe as i loved nothing better than Sevvy , Lyle ,Langer , Faldo ,woosie and Olly winning in America. Loved it .

  7. This is absolutely ridiculous. It is racist, discriminatory and abusive.
I think that non-English speaking players should protest by refusing to ply in some “sponsored” events.
    How stupid!

  8. No way Jose...Only if we are in an English speaking country and nobody speaks our language...But elsewhere it's you is going to speak the native language because otherwise consider yourself out of the game.
English is simple but a confusing language generally speaking!!! Best if we try a Latin language where there no misunderstandings like Spanish which is clear beautiful easy to understand and efficient.

  9. Does this mean that when Americans play in Thailand, China,Spain, Germany etc they have to learn that country's national language?

  10. I completely agree, to speak English means to respect the public.
Many other jobs require English, like airlines pilots. I remember few years ago a Colombian plane crushed down near NY since the pilot, very poor English speaker, wasn't able to explain to the airport control that he was going out of fuel, while waiting to land after twenty other planes!
