Premier League - Barry: "I'm staying at Villa"

Eurosport - Wed, 27 Aug 22:30:00 2008

Midfielder Gareth Barry will not leave Aston Villa before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

2008 Aston Villa Gareth Barry - 0

The 27-year-old had seemed certain to leave Villa Park for Liverpool over the summer, but the move has stalled over recent weeks.

Now, despite apparent late interest from Arsenal, Barry has ended any lingering uncertainty about his future - at least in the short term.

His agent, Alex Black, released a statement reading: "Gareth made a decision to stay two weeks ago and informed Aston Villa of his intentions.

"During this time discussions have taken place to decide the best way forward for all parties.

"Any talks regarding a potential new contract and Aston Villa will not be taking place until the end of the season.

"Gareth wants to concentrate on playing to the best of his ability this season and we hope this draws a line under the matter."

Villa boss Martin O'Neill says he hopes to persuade the England international to sign a new four-year contract worth £70,000-a-week, as well as a rearranged testimonial.

O'Neill said: "We'll see what develops. It's been a long period of time and I genuinely thought it would have resolved itself long, long before now.

"It hasn't happened. If Gareth is our player for the foreseeable future, then that is something that would be delightful for all of us."

  2. After seeing Barry's performance on TV @ the weekend £18M????????..........He can't even pass the ball to someone wearing the same colour shirt! We don't want him! Xabi is a far better player, a better passer of the ball and is quality. Barry should stay @ Villa and £70k per week should soften the blow! He's not worth £70 per week!!!!!!!Nutz

  3. Testimonial!!! Should give all the cash to charities in Birmingham for being such a disloyal toe rag. He will be off as soon as he can so don't get sucked in by this sudden turnaround, Liverpool havent bought him, Arsenal are only putting out feelers and the window closes in hours time - he needs to keep playing in the shop window at Villa Park and if Sats performance is anything to go by he needs to actually start playing this season at some stage. Good servant my backside - we nurtured, trained, fed and watered him from an embryo, gave him opportunities, held him up high, got him into the England squad and he turned and spat in our faces - bit like David Platt if anyone remembers him the difference being someone bought Platt and he didnt have to come back with his tail between his legs. All I hope is that Gareth plays to the best of his ability for us until he goes in January for 10 million to Liverpool. Mark my words fellow Holte Enders, mark my words!

  4. Yuk! i just vomitted in my mouth reading that GB would be offered 70k/week to play football. I love the beautiful game with all my heart but everytime I see a player being paid ridiculous amounts of money it somehow takes a little more spirit from it.

  5. Well it's only Barry's loss. Liverpool are not gonna suffer cause of this.

  9. Fact is, he's only displaying "loyalty" because it's obvious Liverpool aren't now going to come across with the right amount of cash...This deal was a dead duck as soon as they splashed out the £19mill on Robbie Keane, the Yanks that own Liverpool were NEVER going to splash that kind of cash twice in the space of a few weeks... Call me a cynic, but funny how Barry's only just remembered that Villa are the club that nurtured him as a kid after the commotion he's caused all summer, especially as there's now only four days left in the transfer window!! I feel sorry for Villa fans, watch how quickly he suddenly has a "loyalty bypass" if another bid comes in for him at the end of the season.

  10. great that barry is staying put FOR NOW !
But i do feel that if liverpool had coughed up he would have been a lot happier at anfield (proberly warming the bench!).
i'd like to think his change of heart was because he realised that most villa fans wanted him to stay, and was loved by the club and manager and supporters, but hes now found out that hes in a situation of nobody wants to cough up 18m for him......so it now appears that he has to save face, so he now releases a statment to tell all us loyal villa fans hes now had a change of mind and wants to stay put......yeah right !!
well yes, its good to have him still here, but such a shame he made it so damn obvious that he had got fed up with the villa, and couldn't wait to be on his way, but now all must be forgiven !
well us villa fans are certainly no idiots, and love loyal players who give there all for the mighty villa, and so if you still have the pride to wear a villa shirt, its time to show us that commitment on the pitch now and for the rest of the season (starting with a goal against liverpool would be a bonus!!)....I DONT HOWEVER THINK HE (barry) WILL WANT TO SIGN THAT NEW 4 YEAR CONTRACT MR ONEIL IS TALKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW, AND FEEL BY NEXT SEASON HE WILL BE WEARING THE RED SHIRT HE SEEMS TO THINK SUITS HIM MORE THAN THE VILLAS COLOURS? DOES HE REALISE LIVERPOOL WITHOUT TORRES ARE ON THE SLIDE? I FEAR NOT, AND I BET OUR MR TORRES GETS ON HIS BIKE WHEN LIVERPOOL WIN NAF ALL THIS SEASON, SO IS THE GRASS GREENER AT ANFIELD, I THINK NOT MR BARRY !!!......WHAT DO YOU THINK?
so lets just say we now have barry on loan !!!
    super villa forever !!!

  11. Liverpool will be back in January for a cut price deal and Villa will wish they had took the £15 million watch this space.

  12. Barry is an idiot. At his age and the quality he thinks he has, he has not tasted Champions League match. Is it when he is 30 and above he will play CL game. Let him rot in Villa while his mates and juniors are experiencing europe. If he is that good as himself and people think, by now he should be playing for one of the big 4 or foreign club either. But the brat is not good but Villa is splashing 18m on him. @#$%. Money does not have value again in England. Folk.

  17. It is funny... So Gareth, you WANT to stay eh? Don't you mean that Liverpool failed to come up with the money and no one else bothered to bid for you?

I am a Villa fan and am happy he is staying but lets be honest. This "statement" is a load of nonsense.

    From deejaydomino@..., on Wed 27 Aug 4:39PM
  18. villa should have cashed in while they had the chance, whats the betting he will not sign a new deal and will walk away on a bosman free...........then maybe he will turn up at anfield or the emirates !

    From robert_170956, on Wed 27 Aug 4:33PM
  19. first of all James Milner is not a patch on Barry, secondly the only reason this deal never went through is because liverpool screwed it up. Thirdly, we are missing wingers on both sides, watch the game tonight and you will see everything is played in the middle, we are playing gerrard as a winger and kuyt as a winger, both are central players. If we dont get wingers in soon, then we have no chance of winning the big prizes this year and are gonna have to rely on poor old gerrard and torres to do everything again and they cant keep it up all season on thier own.
urrm rant over!! aye aye aye
