Premier League - Pavlyuchenko Spurs-bound

Eurosport - Wed, 27 Aug 16:14:00 2008

Roman Pavlyuchenko could be a Tottenham Hotspur player by Thursday after Spartak Moscow revealed they have accepted an offer for him.

A Spartak spokesman said: "A deal has been agreed between the clubs and the transfer may be concluded by Thursday."

Spurs are thought to have made a £15 million bid for the Russia striker, who scored three goals at Euro 2008 and should have no trouble obtaining a work permit to play in England.

The 26-year-old said: "I can confirm that I am joining Spurs."

"Right now I am getting my visa. As soon as it is ready I will fly to London to sign a contract."

Pavlyuchenko claimed he will not feature in Spartak's Champions League third-round qualifier against Dynamo Kiev as he ties up his switch to England.

He added: "I will not play in Kiev. Everything has happened very quickly so I could not even say goodbye to my team-mates."

The signing could speed Dimitar Berbatov's exit from White Hart Lane to Manchester United, with the Bulgarian one of just two senior strikers on Spurs' books along with Darren Bent.

However, Tottenham remain adamant - publicly, at least - they will not sell Berbatov for less than £30m and are willing to let him "rot" in the reserves if a deal with United is not done before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Pavlyuchenko revealed any reservations he held about the switch to White Hart Lane had faded.

"The only thing that stopped me from leaving was my family," he said.

"But now all doubts are behind me and I decided to sign a contract with Tottenham and the formalities are practically settled."

Spartak's general manager Valery Karpin admitted Spurs' offer had been accepted by the Russian club.

"There is a concrete sum which Tottenham proposed and we have agreed the amount," he told the Soviet Sport newspaper.

"If Roman will agree a contract then we are ready to let go him go. If Roman begins to play in England, this will be good both for him and for the team."

True,Pavlyuchenko had a much better scoring average than that of Henry. But the EPL is more defensive and more physical than League1 or the Russian League. Besides, unlike Henry, Pavlyuchenko is NOT going to have the advantage of taking every penalty and every free kick for his team.I guess we'll just have to wait and see. All I'm saying; he is very enengetic and exciting player but he seems to MISFIRE at close range. Henry is still having a hard time scoring with only the goalkeeper to beat.I think the Spurs are trying to build a good team but it will take time before things start to gell !!

  10. Forget berbatov! hes over priced at £25million. Go for David Villa and David Silva from Valencia for £65m for both of them, no team could stop us then!!

  11. great awareness in the player but does miss a lot of chances if he gets with clive allen for a bit of shooting practice he should be fine

  12. Fergie, rather than go for mega-sulker Berby now why don't you wait and see what the new Russian is like -you might fancy him more? Nobody stops ManU poaching whoever takes their fancy, certainly the Premier League do SFA to stop the big four clicking their fingers and robbing the 'real' teams in the league.
However, 'what goes round, comes round' and when Romamoney, Double-Glaziers, and the Liveryanks all walk away things will change. Maybe not in the immediate future but it will happen.
As for Berbatov, take him and his moods. He will be another Saha and Veron all rolled into one. You're wasting your money Fergie!

  13. Let's see if Mr.Levy will actually do something worth while at last and keep to his words and let Berbatov rot in the reserves, because that is where he should be! And where is Damien Comolli, he has gone very quiet and he has so much to answer for regarding the transfer dealings at Spurs!

  19. He is very active but lacks accuracy. He wastes too many easy chances. He scored 77 goals in 192 games in the Russian League. If Spurs are looking for a goal scorer, he he may not be the real answer !!
