Carling Cup - Martinez enraged by Wigan loss

Eurosport - Thu, 27 Aug 15:08:00 2009

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez launched a scathing attack on his players following their 4-1 Carling Cup humiliation at Blackpool.

FOOTBALL Swansea Roberto Martinez - 0

Martinez's team were sent crashing out of the competition by the Championship side, who were 3-0 up by half-time.

"Certain players did not perform. It is clear this is not what we expected," said Martinez.

"There are certain standards that are not acceptable in our club, and the players should know that.

"We were never in contention to win - and now we are out of the League Cup, which I am upset about.

"As a professional footballer you need to be ready for the chance when it comes along. We can learn a lot from this defeat. Those who have not been involved in the league games were given an opportunity tonight, but it was not good enough.

"Overall as a team and as individuals, we handed the game to Blackpool.

"They did not have to work hard for their goals, and it is very disappointing."

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway, whose side have drawn their two opening league matches, was thrilled with his team's performance.

"Just about everything went right," he said. "We ordered the rain, and it came down just as they went out for their warm-up. I am not sure how many of them actually fancied it - but my lads did."

  1. The sign of a good manager is when he can motivate his team to come back after a defeat. Alex Ferguson is a brilliant example of this (at Wigan's expense). I had hoped to see a similar reaction from Wigan last night, I'm happy to give Martinez some time but this was embarassing!! Wigan need a result of some sort at Everton.

  2. Lucky for Martinez he has one the best chairman around and will support him as best as he can. Sir Alex wanted Martinez as his assistant last season so I doubt hes going to get the sack anytime soon.

  3. Yes Wigan chaged 9 players but Blackpool changed six, they should still of been able to beat us with their team, Unfortunately they encountered the great team spirit we have at pool, well done ollie and up the pool

  4. I can accept the loss against Man U but this game we should of come away with a win.
It is simply not good enough Martinez has got his work cut out.
But he should not change the squad to much as it will have the same effect that it had on Benitez with Liverpool acouple of seasons ago.

  5. I totally disagree with you Frank.

Liverpool have 2 players who regularly play for the first team. You are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think that this is "a lot". All of the top clubs are the same...only one or two players from the youth teams. They are not exciting to watch at all. I do not support a team in the Premiership, they may not be exciting, but they have lots of homegrown players in the team, which as a supporter, is much preferred. I have seen enough Liverpool games to know that they are not so exciting.

Fact is, your near neighbours have more "youth" players in thier side than you do.

Wigan do have a good side. They have lost only 2 players and they have bought well. Remember that this was a team full of players who had not been playing in the league. Steve Bruce did a good job with them last season, you dont become a bad team overnight.

Wigan have also bought fairly well, but thier squad is not good enough and that is what RM found out last night. He will get it right, but these days managers do not get time (Paul Ince last season was a good indicator of that) to get it right. He is good for the game so here's hoping that he does get the chance.

  6. Another team makes 9 or 10 changes and wonder why they lose ...

  7. But Im sure they all still got their wages !!! we all know many footballers are only in the game for the money not for the love of the game and certainly not for the team they play for - thats why teams like Liverpool are so exciting cos you atleast have some local lads who would die for their team and I use that as an example only.

I like this guy he sounds like he means business and knows what it takes BUT he aint got the team to deliver - he is new so he needs time to get rid of the dross and bring in those he can trust - thats wh Rednap is so good he has a small group he carries around with him who do what he wants - there reliable and thats half the battle won.

Wigan have shown promise this year but its going to take time, and with only 2 transfer windows that is months and years NOT weeks. BUt given the chance and opportunity he will get there where ever he is - Wigans biggest challenge is keeping him as I think he is going to be a world class manager !!

  9. I support Arsenal and Pompey, in that order, but anyway wanted to say that I expect RM to sort things out soon.
