Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that Ipswich have been given permission to talk to midfielders Carlos Edwards and Grant Leadbitter.
Former Black Cats boss Roy Keane, now in charge at Portman Road, has made a joint bid to recruit the two men after a dreadful start to his side's Championship campaign.
Bruce said: "We have given both players permission to go and speak with Roy. We'll see what develops after that."
Bruce also confirmed that defender Paul McShane has had a medical at Hull, where he spent the first half of last season on loan, with a view to completing a £2 million permanent switch to the KC Stadium.
However, he said he was not aware of suggestions that Ipswich were also interested in defender Nyron Nosworthy and striker Daryl Murphy.
In addition, he revealed that his interest in Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh is over, and revealed he has been put off his pursuit of Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin because of the asking price.
On Distin, Bruce said: "There's nothing there. The valuation, in my opinion, is too high for somebody who is nearly 32 years old."

The amount that has been quoted as to how much R Keane spent during his time At S/land is vey inaccurate, it is more like £77 Million. However ,thats all irrelevant now as hes gone, and Steve Bruce is much more shrewd in his transfer dealings. He must be , he got £3 mill for Whitehead !!!!!!
As for Edwards signing how much time does he want?? he should be grateful anybody wants him as he aint that good. With regard to Grant ,I am supprised at the choice of club as I thought he would end up at Wigan or Bolton and not a championship side
I have read some ridiculous drivel in my time but "wheresmegold1" has written the biggest rubbish I have ever heard. Second trophy?? 4.6 million on players?? I debated not even replying to this @#$% but he needs to get back in his Mam's spare room and play his video games.
I for one am pleased with Steve Bruce as the current Sunderland manager. I would not swap him back for Keane and I doubt any Sunderland fan would. Yes, I am grateful that he took Sunderland from the bottom of the Championship to the Premier and kept us there. However, Keane is in the past now and only time will tell whether he will become one of the all time greats or someone who couldn't translate his football skill into football management. I am betting on the latter.
wheres me gold 1 keane signed antony stokes for 2mill varga and ross wallace 1.1m david connelly 1.5m, tobias hysen 1.7m carlos edwards 1.5m add on fullop and kavanagh at another 1m between then and it comes to nearly 9m there were a few others as well so in total he spent about 10m the only sizable recoup of that money was selling mccarthney stead and alnwick tolal about 2m. Arca and davis were sold that season but before keane came to the club.so he spent about 8m to get us up.what was frightening was the money he spent once we got up alot was wasted 40m the first yr and sold nobody and then the next 30m including buying back mcarthney for 3.9m more than he sold him for so he spent 70m for us to be a team fighting relegation and as soon as the fans questioned his ability he said if it happened again he would walk which he did after he was booed after we got trounced 4-1 at home to bolton, the man can't take any criticism as soon as things don't go his way and the fans get on his back he will do it again
Oh, and laugh of the week is Fat Sam buying Chimbonda....nuts or what????????
Rich S: I like your style. Not sure about the evidence to back it up, mind, but straight to the point. LOL
Steve Bruce is doing exactly what Mick Mac would like to have done, and Roy Keane didn't do. You need a team to get you up and a different one to move on. Most EPL players are one step and two thoughts ahead of good CCC players. They can buy the time they need to get passes, shots or tackles away or can react because they think BEFORE the ball gets to them, they read situations as they develop, not AFTER they have developed. Carlos and co , as hard-working and committed as they may be can't do that, so they mis-time tackles, get caught in possession and miss plays developing. They will always do a good job in the CCC. As for RK, he is another Keegan, I think. He did great in getting us up, but didn't have the experience to deal with the difficulties of matching wits with experienced EPL managers. He will spit the dummy out though, and I think he may at ipswich.
Sean a, FACT, Keane didnt inherit a premiership squad in a lower division this time and with money to spend. It will take time to develop a squad, worry about ur own house first, u were very near playing us this season.
IPSWICH TOWN THE GREATEST
who the hell mentioned sir bobby bobson you idiot? keep on the story, i was talking about sunderland and how keane took us up, not how good your former stinking bosses where!
FACT: ipswich will not get promoted this season and fight for survivial or mid- table finish.
ipswich town had the best managers one who won the world cup and the great bobby so sean a whos got to get the facts right first
your a prat you ipswich bin licker, got all your facts wrong!
1.we only lost 4 games when keano took over
2.we had won many tropthys before that one
3.if we mackems are prats, then you lot are a bunch of gary glitters
go wipe your feet before you leave your house or the street will get **** all over it! pathetic loser
once Leadbitter and Edwards see what Ipswich are offering for wages, they might not agree to join. Daryl Murphy and Nyron turned them down. Wait until the fat lady sings.
4.6 million you prat..yes to get you to the premier.
The number goes up everytime I hear it from you brats.
Alot of people left the club too.
Everytime sunderland fans criticise RK,everybody laughs at the petulance and the deceitful bile and lies that you brats spew.
Go back to your playstaions and footiemanager you ungrateful prats
and think the point is in the wrong place more like 46million
second trophy in history? please check facts before u comment
Its amazing how ungrateful sunderland fans are.You should be worshipping the ground keane walks on.
He took over your club after you lost your first 6 games.Your team were completely demoralized with players confidence shattered courtesy of playing under mick mccarthy and then niall quinn.
He brought you from that position to win your second trophy in history.
And he only spent 4.6 million. This is one of the greatest managing feats in the last decade for sure.
what a bunch of ungrateful prats you are in sunderland is all I say.
Grant Leadbitter will be an asset to Ipswich, hes an honest hardworking and quite skillfull pro, Carlos Edwards on his day will turn any Championship defence but you gotta catch him on his day. Keane will get it sorted don't worry, he will fall out with players directors and fans alike but he'll sort Ipswich out!
FTM
Comment 18, I completely disagree with your last sentence. Sunderland were lucky to land Roy Keane as he got he from the bottom of the championship to the very top! I don't know why Sunderland fans are so ungrateful, you maybe in League 1 if it wasn't for Keane, so get a grip!
I am a Sunderland fan and I have nothing against Ipswich at all. However, Ipswich's current squad looks pretty crappy and it's not surprising they have struggled. I mean, look at the likes of Jon Stead who couldn't score in a brothel. There is no doubt Leadbitter and Edwards will help their team but Ipswich have far bigger problems with the mental Roy Keane. Keano will quit (again) sooner rather than later just like he did at Sunderland. Keane spat his dummy out when Sunderland's owner asked Keane to keep his mobile on so that he could be reached. Something else will trigger his Ipswich walkout and time will tell what that will be. He already was cursing and swearing at reporters at a press conference the other day. The only club that Keane will ever be a success at is one with mega millions and a chairman and owner who are too scared of him and will never question anything he does. However, Sunderland were far better off after Keane than before he arrived and I really hope that happens at Ipswich as well. But back to my point - thanks Grant & Carlos. You are both hard working professionals and thanks for the job you both did for Sunderland.
As soon as Roy Keane got the Ipswich job, he critisised Sunderland, their owner, the chairman and the players. The bile was all over the press for over two weeks. What does he do when the solids hit the fan? He comes back for players, fails to get Murphy and tries again for Edwards and Leadbitter. Maybe he should eventually learn to keep his mouth shut and not slag off people he might need later. It's embarrassing Roy, for you and your club.
