Arsenal striker Eduardo should be banned for diving in the Champions League play-off round win against Celtic, according to Massimo Donati.
Hoops midfielder Donati wants UEFA to act retrospectively to punish Eduardo, who appeared to throw himself to the ground to win a penalty in the Gunners' 3-1 second-leg win on Wednesday night.
"If it is clear on TV then UEFA must act against Eduardo and ban him," said Donati. "I think he should get a two-match ban because it wasn't a penalty. I told him that and everyone in the Celtic team told him that."
Donati believes Eduardo should be treated the same way as Lithuania striker Saulius Mikoliunas, who cheated to earn a spot-kick against Scotland at Hampden Park in September 2007.
Video evidence was used by UEFA to punish Mikoliunas, who was given a two-match ban.
Wednesday night's game was still 0-0 at the time, though Arsenal held a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger acknowledged Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc did not bring down Eduardo in the penalty incident but claimed his forward was taking evasive action.
Celtic defender Glenn Loovens was in no doubt Eduardo had dived.
"I don't think he even speaks English so there was no point talking to him," Loovens added.
"It is very disappointing but that is football. It's sad it happened to us. I don't think it is really fair. But it helped his team take the lead. There is a referee and a linesman to see those kind of things."

Since each and every Celtic fan is playing on semantics, allow me to do the same. UEFA, by calling under revision the Eduardo incident, is implying that the referee (and, at least one linesman) were incompetent: they let themselves be fooled by a player. Incidentally, the goalkeeper should have been either red carded, if no other defender was between him and the goal line or shown his yellow card for a foul in the area. The weakest link is the player, let's ban him. Arsenal, if Eduardo is given anything other than a clean bill, should let UEFA know that they will not play a single match of their CL schedule while the punishment is in effect. Celtic fans should complain to UEFA that Gallas' goal in their first match, was "unconventional" he got it while he was diving, the second goal should not be allowed either, their own defender had dived, that Arshavin "sneaked" behind the defense, and Eboue showed too many teeth after scoring. That would leave Arsenal with no goals, and voila, thanks to Big Mouth Donati, Celtic would be in the next stage of the C.L. Coming back to reality, the idea that Celtic would have topped Arsenal, in London, is laughable. Two down, you are outclassed, outgunned, (no pun intended), out everything, worse you played like some team in the third tier of the Coca Cola Championship, and it is that goal that cut your hopes? Is there a Nobel Prize for optimism. Eduardo has had his legs cut under him physically, they could not do it again, so they try morally.
Does it not seem strange that Mr Plattina and co refuse the use of Goal line technology but are happy all of a sudden to use video technology to persecite individual players. Funnily enough when the world class diver Renaldo was diving for a pass time no action was taken, but as its an Arsenal player they decide to do something.
Who is this Donati? Is he a samaritan? why papers refer him? its all joking. rOALDO DIVES, rONEY DIVES, GERRARD divs, Drogba dives, and Gary's comment about Wenger is a shame. Edwardo has no history of diving. UEFA must think twice before they bn Edardo. A caution will do. Why Arsenal? it once happened to Viera and now its Edward of Arsenal..UEFA MUST BE TAKEN TO COURT. Did UEFA WATCH THE bARCELONA-cHELSEA game? Shame o you with yor double standards...be fair forclubs to e fair.
Say what you like but that penalty goal knocked the heart out of Celtic at that stage of the game not only were we 3 down but we knew a cheating scumbag had delibertly dived to put the tie beyond our reach, who's to say Celtic wouldn't have nicked a goal before half time (we had enough chances) and produced a different 2nd half altogether so don't say the dive didn't affect the result... it did.. you arrogant cheating doormats of Europe.
He's just come back from a horrible injury . It's only reasonable for him to be extra careful . He deserves our support and not condemnation for his courage .He is a blessing to this generation and the game . Let's try to be objective in all our dealings .
As long as referee and his two assistants didn`t see it there`s noway he should be banned. If EUFA couldn`t purnish the referee who could award even one penalty out of four in champions league semi-finals between chelsea and barcelona, then why Eduado should be querried at all. That`s the risk professional takes; is either you are awarded the penalty or the player is RED CARDED. Nothing should be more than that. So, I dont support the idea either to ban or even fined Eduado. That has always been part of the game. It`s a mistake on the referee otherwise he would have given a straight red to Eduado.
princecharming, the law punishes the cheater and the law breaker, not a referee who did not see the acting or who fell under the spell of the Hollywood crush of Eduardo. from a law perspective, the referee is a victim because he was fooled with the action of Eduardo. and regarding the outcome of the match, the player is punished but punishing his team has more perspectives to it. why would the team suffer his stupidity? As much as why would Celtic suffer his stupidity? no matter which way you go there will be a loser. In this case, it is Celtic..
Have to laugh at the comments from Man U fans about him being a cheat for diving, oh how short memories they have Ronaldo was very good at falling over a blade of grass if an opposition player was within a few inches of him.
are there any arsenal fans out there besides for myself still concerned about wenger not making any big signings yet ? we desperately need a GOOD striker and perhaps another good attacking midfielder ! Wenger is just training good youngsters into world class players and selling them on , arsenal are now a feeder club for the rest of the big clubs in europe ! a few seasons ago we had top players berkamp, vierra, henry etc.etc. who we got now to take over ! we aint won anything for the last few years and thats going to be the story until wengers gone ...
you ban the player but arsenal is still in the group stage so what is the point, i am an arsenal fan and admit he dived and should be punished, same goes for the referee and lines men because they were supposed to keep watch of the match, but it s also over for celtic.

jannette.mead: This article ISN'T about those players though is it? Stop trying to gain points. The article IS about Eduardo being a cheat..................FACT!
ye it woz a dive but how many times haz the likes of ronaldo, ronaldinho, torres dived
Yes, it was a dive. But how did this become the crime of the century? If UEFA wants to ban him, that's fine, but let's not act like it was the first dive in professional football since the advent of colour television. Diving is a very ugly part of the game, and I completely agree that heavier sanctions should exist to combat it. However, who can deny that Eduardo is getting much harsher treatment for actions no worse than those of Owen, C. Ronaldo, Drogba, Gerrard (in umm... er... no particular order...)? Complain about Eduardo's penalty win if you wish, but be consistent - either look the other way for all those who dive, or come down upon ALL those cheaters with great vengeance and furious anger.
