Premier League - Wenger: Stoke are a rugby team
PA Sport - Fri, 27 Aug 08:16:00 2010
Arsene Wenger has demanded more referee protection for his team, accusing Stoke City of turning football into rugby against Tottenham.
The Gunners - who have completed the signing of experienced French defender Sebastien Squillaci from Sevilla - head to Blackburn on Saturday looking to improve on their last visit.
In the wake of that 2-1 defeat, Wenger berated Rovers for showing "no purpose to play the ball" as they blocked keeper Lukasz Fabianski at every opportunity and also blamed referee Martin Atkinson for not providing his team with more protection.
While the Arsenal manager has no beef with Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce for looking to utilise a more direct approach, Wenger says there must be limits.
"When a team plays long ball and head the ball and become physical I accept that completely and I respect that - but it has to be in respect of the rules," he said. "I believe everybody looks at his squad and tries to find a way where the game is most efficient and we developed one way. It is not the only way, I respect every other way as long as the referees get the rules respected.
"I saw some pictures last Sunday; you cannot say anymore it is football, it is rugby on the goalkeepers [more] than football. The referees cannot go on and accept that. When you see how [Stoke defender] [Ryan] Shawcross kicked [Tottenham goalkeeper] [Heurelho] Gomes, how [Robert] Huth pushed Gomes in the goal, you cannot say that is football anymore. If the referees allow that you cannot accept that because that has nothing to do with the game."

Stoke cvnts moaniing. Dont worry we wont have to put up with you guys after this season cause ur going back to the championship. Hows that
Arsene sure has forgotten the heady days of Dennis "The Elbow" Bergkamp, Tony"Oops, did I Kick you" Adams and Martin "Ugly as sin and more than a bit demented" Keown.
French Tw*t
Arsey Whinger is le coq unsportif !
I eat steak medium rare, I drink beer not wine, I comb my hair with a house brick and I can count to 10 because God gave me 10 fingers( It would be 21 if I could see past my guts). I like good hard but fair football, I dont like wengers and sooks, and I love Stoke because they have a long proud history and are battlers to the end. A win for me is any point further from relegation and inflicting pain on the oppositions pride and points tally. Harden the f up Wenger, you probably pay your third choice keeper as much as the Potters pay their entire starting 11.
I am always amused when I watch Wenger complaining about the aspects of play employed by teams playing against Arsenal. He seems to have a problem with his eyesight at times when he often misses ann incident perpetrated by a member of his team. Van Persie has a tendency to leave his foot in or practise his diving techniques in the penalty area or indeed anywhere on the pitch where he can secure an advantage for his team. However he is not alone, in the Pemiership there are lots of players who do similar things. Unfortunately, the game has become dominated by big money and teams will do anything to remain in the Premiership. So Arsene, toughen up your squad and as well as playing the good football for which your teams are famous teach them to dish out some of the same stuff that they seem to have to put up with each week. and stop moaning all the time which only draws attention to you and your team.
as a stoke fan id like to say what a load of bollocks! all teams play to there strenths. stoke are a big phyical side who dont stop for 90 mins. evrytime we start to get somwhere there are haters who put us down. we have stayd uptwo seasons and finished 11 & 12 . we belong in the prem we r one of the oldest clubs in the country,. in 5 years stoke will be in europe . you dont need spend stupid amounts on players just get a good team that have a heart to win.
If you would like to see an outrageous tackle on a goalkeeper have a look at R Van Persie Arsenal v Stoke season before last. No doubt mard Arsen didn't see it. YouTube watch?v=yNPDTivssKk&NR=1
you take a lot of long time to understand dont you wenger!?
now you realise that england style in football is to be dirty rugby boring football...
Visca el Barca!
Same old Arsenal always cheating moaning diving and generally being soft as s**t* when they cannot get their own way. Football is a mans game how would Mr. Whinger have coped with Norman Hunter Jackie Charlton Tommy Smith Alan Bloor Denis Smith Billy Bremner and all the other hard men who still knew what football was and went about it without moaning or groaning. Personally sick and tired of that french t**t now I wonder if he has any other dummies to spit out of his pram this season. I hope hes got a good suit of armour he will need when he comes to the Brit
Who is George?
At a guess, sounds like one of those who have stood on the North Bank stamping their feet to keep warm. Struggled to get to a stinking rabbit hutch for a piss after a pint of warm swill from a plastic glass under the East stand on cold concrete.. Yet not minding this, warmed by the very history of this most famous club in the world long before the Munich air disaster and the rise of Man Utd. Others need to have experienced this to understand Arsene Wenger and his(our) love for his club. Tactics is one thing, but sodomising the game another. Unfortunately there is always a brutus(no pun intended) the likes of fat sam and Pulis(not to mention phil brown and the glasgow bruiser at b'ham) waiting to spoil anything that finds them out to be nothing more than barbarians at the gates of rome(sorry the Emirates). If not George, ya hearts in the right place.
You know as a Spurs fan, I have more right than most to have a pop at the s'@#$% down the road ... but for once, Ars'ene got it right, the way stoke went about their 'business' last week was a joke, just glad we got the win ! Won't be surprised if rovers go physical against the s'@#$%, it is fat sam's team after all
im an arsenal fan. what arseneis doing is trying to soften up the ref before tomorrows game. alot of mamagers do this before they play there bogey team. this complaint will put more pressure on the ref to stamp out the tackling in the first 15 minutes of the game. hes not the first manager to do this and he wont be the last
I would suggest that other teams stand around and don't put any tackles in while Arsenal go about their marvelous passing game. But I would sound like a p rick, so I won't suggest that!
will arsenal just shut up and play football the manager just moans that y no trophty new signings no ambition and fabergas no ambition to win any thing that y he stays let him go to barca

I'm going to say that not all arsenal fans are (insert expletive of choice here). I am an arsenal fan and very proud of my team in that we play great football and are very attractive to watch. However I do despair at the hypocrisy of Arsene "I didn't see it" Wenger, Arsenal were a physical side, although our disciplinary record was slightly affected by employing Patrick Vieira. I have watched Stoke in the past and, honestly in my opinion they are limited tactically and try to basically kick teams out of the game, saw them at Chelsea last year in the FA cup and despite being amused by the away fan's chants aimed at John Terry found them tedious on the pitch and lacking in any flair or creativity.
Now, Wenger is a fantastic manager however he has made some wrong decisions in the past, as have all managers but so has Tony Pulis. Shawcross broke Francis Jeffers' leg a few years ago, and Aaron Ramsey has had his leg broken in an incident with Shawcross. I personally haven't watched the incident as I don't particularly enjoy watching legs break.
Football needs discipline in the same way Rugby does. If only the captain was allowed to talk to the referee then life would be so much simpler, it is technically descent to argue with the referee a bookable offence I think?
If the fifth official is introduced I wonder how well Stoke will do then seeing as their exploits in the penalty area are well documented.
So can we please stop with the pointless name-calling and agree that Arsenal and Stoke are two very different teams with very different managers and have very different ideas about how football should be played. Ruthless efficiency or continental flair? It's a question that will be debated until one philosophy wins out. Look at Inter v Barca at the nou camp in the champo league semi-final last year.
So can we please agree to disagree and look forward to the fixtures at the Brittania and the Emirates and hopefully two very ente
i am sure someone else will have already said this but here goes
i presume wenger is referring to last years stoke vs arsenal at the brittania
sorry to say he does have a point the referee was awful he let to many potential bookings go there should have been at least 5 or 6 yellow cards and at least 1 red for sol campbell before the ramsey incident and at least 1 more for sol after having been there watching the match it seemed the ref had been told both teams where determined to play "the phyisical game" and to let them get on with it
as for ramsey i can only hope he is going to make a full recovery and return to top flight football a better player and for his sake and all the other gunners i hope they have a better more honest and much more caring manager
i will explain
the spattering of yellow cards where deserved by both teams fouls where been commited by both sides and a few yellows would have calmed things also it was blatently obvious wenger had instructed his players to go in hard ...... the result ramsey who if you care to look you will find broke his leg before contact was made the pictures are there for all to see its clear also the video of the game is about ... now i respect all football fans but come on you arsenal fans was wenger really playing his normal tactics i think not
and lets be honest if youve got skillful players why ask them to play the hard game
because arsenal on form should play stoke off the pitch
but the truth is wenger got it wrong and all this stuff and nonsense about rugby is just him trying to cover his failure to get his tactics right
out of 3 matches at the brit arsenal lost 1 humiliatingly drew 1 and ruined a playerin last years meet
so mr wenger either grow a pair and admit you got it wrong 3 times or at the very least do right by your players and let them play properly .....stop the winging and wining admit you made mistakes or if just if stoke where to beat you you are going to look very stupid
Stoke fans are all a bunch of c*nts!
Oh how I would love to see rugby rules applied to football.
When a foul is declared by the referee, players must move away or else the foul is moved ten yards forward.
Question the referee, ten yards forward.
Foul or abusive language, ten yards forward.
Dirty/foul play, sin binned for a period.
That would bringmany of the prima donna players and managers back to the real world.
