McCormack: Well can be bettter

Thu 27 Sep, 09:45 AM

Ross McCormack says there is still better to come from Motherwell - even after their dismissal of holders Hibernian from the CIS Insurance Cup.The 21-year-old forward was in top form as the Steelmen produced a surprise result on Wednesday night, inflicting a first defeat of the season on Hibs in a 4-2 victory at Easter Road.

Mark McGhee's men were exceptional during the first half when they hit back from Clayton Donaldson's opener to score three goals in seven minutes - from David Clarkson, Keith Lasley and McCormack's sublime lob.

Chris Porter wrapped up the third-round win late on, before home striker Mickael Antoine-Curier netted his first goal for the club as a consolation.

McGhee speculated post-match whether his side can play even better - but McCormack is in no doubt they can, after reaching the cup quarter-finals.

The player, who has netted three times this term, said: "We said from the start that we had nothing to fear coming here.

"We believed we could win and showed away at Aberdeen when we won 2-1 that we have a spirit and determination.

"I think it showed on the park that the boys are really working hard for each another.

"But we should maybe convert more chances - and I think there is always room for improvement.

"If there was nothing to improve on, we wouldn't be playing for Motherwell, Hibernian or whoever - we'd be at the Nou Camp. I think there is still a bit to come from the boys."

McCormack was only a second-half substitute in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Falkirk and proved a point to his manager with an excellent display, after being restored to the starting line-up.

Now he is relishing locking horns with his former club Rangers when they visit Fir Park in the SPL on Saturday.

The player, who left Ibrox in July 2006, added: "We've got to take great confidence from the cup win.

"Not many teams come here and score four goals - but Rangers is a different kettle of fish.

"They are good team, going well in the Champions League, but we believe on the day we can match and beat anyone.

"We've got attacking players; it's attractive football we're playing - and it's great to be involved in.

"We'll be looking for a good draw in the next round of the cup, but I think the boys can go the distance in this competition."
