For the second time in four days league leaders Roma let slip a lead late on as Fiorentina grabbed a 2-2 draw in Florence on Wednesday.
Champions Internazionale took full advantage of the Giallorossi's dropped points, beating Sampdoria 3-0 with a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to join Roma at the top of the Serie A table.
Elsewhere, Milan's patchy form continued as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Palermo, while Juventus crushed Reggina 4-0 and former Milan striker Marco Borriello scored a hat-trick in promoted Genoa's 3-2 win at home to Udinese.
At the Stadio Artemio Franchi, Fiorentina twice came from behind to earn a point in a highly entertaining match, the second equaliser coming from an Adrian Mutu penalty with just ten minutes remaining.
Roma had dropped their first points of the season with a 2-2 draw at the weekend after a last minute goal from Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta had pulled the Old Lady level, and coach Luciano Spalletti will have been concerned to have seen a similar story pan out just days later.
Brazilian Mancini put the hosts in the lead on 19 minutes, only for Alessandro Gamberini to equalise on the volley five minutes later. That lead was not to last long though, Ludovic Giuly firing Roma ahead once again before the first half was out.
But Mutu's late spot kick after substitute Christian Vieri had been fouled in the box handed Fiorentina a point and left Roma to rue their apparent inability to hang on to a lead.
Mancini opened the scoring, beating Viola keeper Sebastien Frey with a delightful chip from the edge of the penalty area to allay fears that the Giallorossi would struggle for goals in the absence of the injured Francesco Totti, who netted twice at the weekend.
Indeed, the visitors were close to taking the lead eight minutes earlier, but Mirko Vucinic's prod past Frey from Giuly's through ball was ruled out for offside. Replays later showed the linesman to be spot on with his decision.
Fiorentina were quick to respond, midfielder Ricardo Montolivo letting fly from distance - not for the first time on the night, nor the last - only for his effort to fly inches over the bar.
But the Viola did find the back of the net soon after, Gamberini sidefooting a volley past Doni - who flapped terribly on the cross from a corner - to level things up at one apiece on 24 minutes.
What had already been an free-flowing encounter - Mutu's early header and Tomas Ujfalusi's long range effort both went narrowly wide while Mancini should have done better with a stray shot after just four minutes - was further opened up by the goals and more chances fell to both sides before Giuly put Roma in the lead again.
Of the 22 players on the pitch, Mutu was the most culpable of misfiring, taking too long to slot a close range effort home just after the half hour mark, then volleying wide from a corner a minute later before seeing Doni pull off a fantastic save to deny him a headed goal.
And Fiorentina were made to regret their profligacy in front of goal as Giuly finished off a classic Roma counter attack on 37 minutes to hand the visitors the lead for a second time.
The second half started in much the same vein as the first ended; with end-to-end action and plenty of exciting football.
But it was the introduction of 34-year-old Vieri on 72 minutes, for Franco Semioli, that eventually changed the game.
The journeyman striker - clearly looking for a penalty - waited for Matteo Ferrari to make a challenge in the box before falling over his opponent's body. Gamesmanship it was, but equally, it was a clear penalty, and the referee had no choice but to point to the spot.
Mutu held his nerve and neatly clipped the ball over Doni to bring Fiorentina back on level terms for a second time.
The goal seemed to jerk Roma into action, and the final ten minutes very nearly produced a winner for the visitors, Frey being called into action to deny Philippe Mexes a header and Daniele De Rossi a well-struck free-kick
Roma were helped in their desperate cause late on by the sending off of Marco Donadel for a second bookable offence - a cynical trip on Giuly - but once again, the capital club failed to make their earlier advantage count by the time the whistle sounded at the end of the match.
CATANIA 1-0 EMPOLI
Jorge Martinez grabbed the winner for the home side just after halftime, while Catania's Giacomo Tedesco and Empoli's Lino Marzoratti were dismissed late on for two rash tackles as tempers threatened to boil over.
GENOA 3-2 UDINESE
Marco Borriello bagged a hat-trick for the hosts in this end-to-end affair.
Visiting keeper Samir Handanovic made a hash of punching a cross and Borriello took full advantage with a controlled finish before netting again after the break.
Genoa keeper Rubinho was dismissed early in the second half when he was wrongly adjudged to have handled outside the area and Asamoah Gyan quickly grabbed a goal back for Udinese when he flicked in as the ball flew around the box.
Former Milan striker Borriello, who had struck a post with a furious free kick early on, scored his third goal from the penalty spot before Udinese's Giandomenico Mesto reduced the arrears to make it a tense finish.
INTERNAZIONALE 3-0 SAMPDORIA
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored another brace to follow his double in the 2-2 draw at Livorno on Sunday.
The Swede picked up the ball outside the box and drove in a superb angled drive midway through the first half and then wriggled free from a challenge to smash home with his left foot early in the second half.
Champions Inter, who have stuttered so far this term, finished off their best showing so far this season when Luis Figo crashed home a shot.
JUVENTUS 4-0 REGGINA
Nicola Legrottaglie prodded home just after half-time following a scramble and former Bayern Munich midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic doubled their advantage moments later when he turned in after team mate David Trezeguet's miskick.
Trezeguet, who had a goal wrongly denied for offside in the first half, then breached the offside trap with a long run to make it three before Raffaele Palladino completed the rout in stoppage time.
Juve rested Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved from the starting line-up.
LAZIO 3-1 CAGLIARI
Italy striker Tommaso Rocchi scuffed the ball home from a tight angle early in the second period to set an inconsistent Lazio on their way to their first win this term.
Strike partner Goran Pandev extended the lead with a thumping finish on the hour.
Robert Acquafresca gave the home side a scare when he scored with a clever header but Rocchi made sure late on.
NAPOLI 1-0 LIVORNO
Roberto Sosa scored five minutes from time to extend Napoli's dream start back in Serie A.
Napoli were again the beneficiaries of a goalkeeping howler, with Marco Amelia's error leading to the goal.
The promoted club lie fourth, just a point off the lead, while Livorno are joint bottom.
PALERMO 2-1 MILAN
A last-gasp free kick from Fabrizio Miccoli and a controversial strike by Aimo Diana gave Palermo a famous victory over a Milan side which has made a messy start to the season.
Clarence Seedorf put Milan ahead on 10 minutes with a cool finish following a neat pass from Kaka and could have wrapped up the game when he blasted wide with a good opportunity in the second half.
Milan goalkeeper Dida missed the game with a recurrence of a shoulder injury and replacement Zeljko Kalac endured a nervous game.
PARMA 2-0 TORINO
Reginaldo opened the scoring in the second half before on-loan Manchester City forward Bernardo Corradi grabbed his second of the campaign when he poked in from close range.
SIENA 1-1 ATALANTA
Simone Loria headed in unmarked against his former side to give Siena a deserved first-half lead.
However, Atalanta equalised on the hour thanks to Cristiano Doni's penalty following a push on Ferreira Pinto as the ball was flashed across the box.
