Championship - Warnock intent on retirement

Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock has confirmed he will retire from football management at the end of the next season.

His decision will bring to an end a career spanning almost 30 years during which he has taken charge of eight league clubs.

The outspoken 59-year-old said upon his arrival at Selhurst Park in 2007 that the Eagles' job would be his last in management and with his contract due to expire in 2010, he is set to keep his word.

Warnock's no-holds-barred attitude has seen him make as many foes as friends over the years, although he claims he is a far different character now than the one who started life in management at Gainsborough Trinity in 1981.

"You get mellower as you get older," he told The Times.

"There are only two or three managers, two or three journalists and two or three chairmen I've got a problem with, and that's not a bad record considering I've been in the game since I was 18."

One of those he has a problem with is Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore, who Warnock still blames for Sheffield United's relegation from the top flight in the 2006-07 season.

Warnock is convinced West Ham should have been deducted points for their involvement in the Carlos Tevez affair, meaning United would have stayed up.

"Every time I see Scudamore's face on the television I feel sick," Warnock said.

"Lawyers want me to look into suing West Ham because nobody lost out more than me."

  1. After tuesday's defeat at home to Forest and Warncks normal post match rant and moan why can't he retire now. Football needs decent managers not loud mouthed pratts like Warnock. He is killing Palace who I have supported for 41 years.

  4. Well said Simon L, what is Warnock tinking of declaring this at such a time. It shows how little he cares or is bothered.

  5. Great! first we have an owner who longer wants the club and looking for a potential buyer, now our manager decides he wants to announce his retirement date? guys neither of you are doing player/squad morale any favours.

  6. One hugh pratt, was, is and always will be, he claims that each time he see's Scudamore's face on TV he wants to be sick, I would suggest that every football fan seeing Warnock's face on TV want to slap it??

    Obnoxous person indeed.
