Premier League - Team of the Week

Eurosport - Mon, 27 Oct 13:37:00 2008

Robinho unsurprisingly takes the accolades this week, while the self-proclaimed 'best player in the world' gets a run out in our Flops XI.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Manchester City Robinho - 0

HOW IT WORKS

We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail, The Times and The Guardian - to create a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the team of the week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK (4-4-2)

He might have cost more than the GDP of several developing nations, but Robinho's hat-trick against Stoke made it six goals in six games for the mercurial Brazilian and earned him the accolade of player of the week. Sunderland's Djibril Cisse lines up alongside him in attack, by virtue of a goal-scoring performance against Newcastle and a celebration that makes Robbie Keane's forward roll look rather pathetic. The only player to keep his place from last week is Ryan Giggs of Manchester United, whose distribution was superb against Everton. The back-four is an exclusively Merseyside affair, with the region's football ambassador Jamie Carragher barking the orders in an accent Fabio Aurelio and Phil Jagielka may struggle to understand. Notable mention to Kieran Richardson, who scored a free-kick no goalkeeper in the world would have saved.

GK: Robert Green (West Ham) - 40

RB: Phil Neville (Everton) - 34

CB: Jamie Carragher (Liverpool) - 42

CB: Phil Jagielka (Everton) - 39

LB: Fabio Aurelio (Liverpool) - 35

RM: Steed Malbranque (Sunderland) - 39

CM: Luka Modric (Tottenham) - 40

CM: Ryan Giggs (Manchester United) - 41

LM: Kieran Richardson (Sunderland) - 38

FW: Robinho (Manchester City) - 43

FW: Djibril Cisse (Sunderland) - 41

FLOPS OF THE WEEK

It takes a monumentally poor performance to be named flop of the week when your position is goalkeeper and your team kept a clean sheet, but that is exactly the feat achieved by Heurelho Gomes of Tottenham. No wonder Harry Redknapp is eyeing Calamity James. Gomes will be guarded by no fewer than three Wigan defenders, who conceded four at home to Aston Villa in a manner their manager Steve Bruce cannot be best pleased with. In midfield there is a surprise call-up for Cristiano Ronaldo, who will surely not enjoy the very basic facilities in the Flops' dressing room. The same will be true of Nicolas Anelka, who was practically invisible for Chelsea as they lost to Liverpool and said goodbye to their 10,000-year-old unbeaten home record in the league.

GK: Heurelho Gomes (Tottenham) - 18

RB: Emmerson Boyce (Wigan) - 23

CB: Titus Bramble (Wigan) - 23

CB: Paul Scharner (Wigan) - 24

LB: Andy Dawson (Hull) - 22

RM: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) - 25

CM: Fabrice Muamba (Bolton) - 26

CM: Gavin McCann (Bolton) - 24

LM: Olivier Kapo (Wigan) - 22

FW: Salomon Kalou (Chelsea) - 24

FW: Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea) - 25

TEAM OF THE SEASON (minimum four starts)

That man Robinho replaces Wayne Rooney in our Team of the Season, with Giggs and Javier Mascherano also forcing their way into the line-up after impressive performances.

GK: Shay Given (Newcastle United) - 34.4 average

RB: Jose Bosingwa (Chelsea) - 33.77

CB: Kamil Zayatte (Hull City) - 35.8

CB: Michael Turner (Hull City) - 35.33

LB: Gael Clichy (Arsenal) - 33.83

RM: Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City) - 36.7

CM: Frank Lampard (Chelsea) - 36

CM: Javier Mascherano (Liverpool) - 36.5

LM: Ryan Giggs (Manchester) - 36

FW: Amr Zaki (Wigan Athletic) - 35.5

FW: Robinho (Manchester City) - 35.16

FLOPS OF THE SEASON

David Bentley's efforts against Bolton have taken him out of the Flops XI and left a space for West Brom's Chris Brunt. Edwin van der Sar is another man breathing a sigh of relief, because no goalkeeper in the Premier League is as bad as Gomes. The strikeforce is still an exclusively Tottenham affair, despite the fact both Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko found the onion bag against Bolton.

GK: Heurelho Gomes (Tottenham) - 28.39

RB: Justin Hoyte (Middlesbrough) - 27.5

CB: Younes Kaboul (Portsmouth) - 26

CB: Leon Cort (Stoke City) - 26.2

LB: Andrea Dossena (Liverpool) - 26

RM: Chris Brunt (West Bromwich Albion) - 28

CM: Amdy Faye (Stoke City) - 23.75

CM: Mohamed Shawky (Middlesbrough) - 27

LM: Morten Gamst Pedersen (Blackburn Rovers) - 27.33

FW: Roman Pavlyuchenko (Tottenham Hotspur) - 24.75

FW: Darren Bent (Tottenham Hotspur) - 26.62

  5. I started supporting Arsenal in the seventies, and have supported them ever since. Win, lose or draw i will always support them. I don't think losing to any team is the end of the world. If teams lose every so often, it stops the fake fans who change the clubs they support depending on successes. Obviously, i would love to see Arsenal win every game from now till the end of time, but at the end of the day, it seperates the true fans from the wannebes, till the next team buys a title.

  8. suzy, you are delusional.

City fans disloyal? City fans disappear when we lose? We have stuck with a losing side for the past 30 years so get your facts right, or stick to sowing.

  10. How can you choose a losing keeper in your team of the week when the opposition keeper also made world class saves?

  11. Brilliant 13 and 30. Just what this column needs rather than the usual hatred from the fanatics.Good on you

  12. Up front was Drogba and playing alone,
Big lumping striker who likes a good moan.
Taunted by Tevez, the Drog took the bait,
Slapping big Vidic made red card his fate.

Best in the fist half were reds by a mile,
But after half time, blues turned on the style.
Hitting the woodwork a couple of times,
And a good clearance off the goalies lines.

Honours were even throughout extra time,
Any team scoring would be such a crime.
Both sets of players had given their all,
Best teams in Europe could stand proud and tall.

Time for the end game of penalties kicks,
Not for the faint hearts that miss a few ticks.
12 yards of green grass between ball and post,
Champion winners will slot in the most.

Up came Ronaldo with arrogant stance,
Stopping his run up for a second glance.
Cech stood and watched him and moved not an inch,
Parried the slider that proved such a cinch.

Step up John Terry as skip of the team,
Last of the spot kicks will forefill your dream
Hitting the upright lost Chelsea the Cup,
Wearing the right studs wont make you slip up.

Christian Ronaldo is a lucky boy,
Taking the mickey is not a good ploy.
his team mates saved him from looking a prat.
Crying his eyes out was not worth all that.

Roman the Russian has signed a new man,
formerly Spetznaz but now a hitman.
top the Israeli when we play the Spurs,
must call up Jose whatever occurs.

See you next season when Jose is back,
get shot of Droba and his pal Ballack.
    Losing Malouda is also required,
Time that Ferrara is also retired.

Time for the roubles to buy a new team
Raid on the Nou camp for some of their cream.
Messi and Deco are first on the list,
Then Ronaldino are not to be missed.

Out with the old stock and in with the new,
Look for the Title from new boys in blue.
Get rid of Avram and bring back Jose,
Whatever he wants, just double his pay!!!!
