Serie A - Gilardino banned for handball

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has been banned for two matches for scoring a goal with his arm in Sunday's 3-1 win at Palermo.

The league's sporting judge said that after reviewing television evidence, it was clear the Italy forward had deliberately used his arm when he slid in for the opening goal in the 19th minute.

The statement said the act was punishable because it was "serious unsporting conduct".

Palermo were furious that the goal was allowed to stand and even more livid that Gilardino ran away to celebrate (pictured).

"Gilardino deserves a five-game ban. He even celebrated, incredible," the Sicilian side's president Maurizio Zamparini said before the announcement.

Former Milan forward Gilardino, top scorer in Serie A this term with seven goals, will miss Wednesday's home game with champions Internazionale and next Sunday's match at Siena.

Post-match use of video evidence often leads to soccer players being banned for bad tackles or violent incidents which were missed by the referee. However, it is rare to punish a player for handball using replays.

  1. These bunches of idiots who call themselves sporting judges.. you donot ban the refs for their stupid decisions like awarding offside goals and rejecting clean ones yet you punish players. Gilardino is being payed for his services and not his sportsmanship. He rejoiced to a greater extent because the goal he taught will not be accepted and could even cause him the match was awarded. Ask yourselfs where and what the linesman was going when the goal went in. In short I am so upset I don't want to further comment.....

  2. Just for the record, Milan was also implicated in the Calciopoli and only a naive fool would think that Inter had nothing to do with it. Furthermore, a two-days' ban is a little much, one day should be enough.
