Evra admits United lacked spirit

Tue, 27 Oct 08:21:39 2009

Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra has questioned the team's attitude after they were eclipsed by Liverpool at Anfield.

Evra was left frustrated at the manner of United's first defeat in 12 games in all competitions. Goals from a fit-again Fernando Torres and substitute David Ngog in the second half ended a run of four losses for Liverpool.

"I'm always happy to play at Liverpool, I am not scared," he told MUTV. "We also have a lot of experienced players, who are used to big games. But we did not show the Manchester United spirit."

He added: "The advice was to play our football but we did not do that and I do not know why.

"Liverpool were aggressive but we did not play and that is why it is so frustrating to lose.

"Normally we create at least five or six clear chances in a game but we only had the one when Valencia hit the bar. It is not enough if you want to win against Liverpool."

United defender Nemanja Vidic is set for a one-match ban after being picking up two yellow cards.

Evra, however, agreed with Ferguson that Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher should have been dismissed for a challenge on former team-mate Michael Owen when he was clean through.

"I do not understand why Carragher only got a yellow card for fouling Owen when I think he was the last man," said the French defender.

"But I look more at the display of Manchester United and the display was poor."

  2. MU let Liverpool have space in the midfield. MU committed the same error in the game vs Barcelona. The only way that you can stop strikers like Torres or Eto is to stop the supply to them. Once they get the ball, it is too late to do anything. MU's midfield defense was not exist in that game. Carrick is slow, Scholes is old while Fletcher was not in the game.
Fletcher is the most important player in the midfield in a big game. Take a look of record, if he is in a big game, MU wins. If he is not, MU loses. He is the only player in MU (Hagreaves is still injuried) who can really clear out the midfield. Midfield is the key in big game. Who controls the midfield, who wins.

  4. Fair's fair - on the day we got beaten by the better team. The first goal was quite simple - we were defending too high up the pitch and Rio Ferdinand got beaten for pace by the man who is probably Europe's best centre forward. The second goal was also quite simple - everyone was right up forward in a desperate attempt to get the equaliser which inevitably left the goalkeeper exposed.

But Liverpool fans shouldn't get carried away with this win. Consider the following factors:

    1) United, as a whole, just didn't come to the party. They didn't compete in midfield and allowed the majority of second half possession to Liverpool meaning a lack of decent attacking chances. Additionally this fixture always brings the best out of Liverpool - I think that this is the best that Liverpool have played in a long time and United the worst I have seen them for a long time.

    2) Key United players such as Giggs, Scholes, Rooney and Ferdinand were unusually quiet. I rather suspect that they will be having a serious talk with the manager about their performance level.

    3) Evra was booked very early for only his second challenge (and the first one was not even a foul - TV evidence clearly shows that Torres tripped over his own feet) which somewhat restricted him. Lucas, on the other hand was allowed free licence to foul all over the pitch without being booked.

    4) Carragher should have definitely been sent off - the last man hauling down an opposing striker gets sent off in any other match. If he had the result might easily have been a draw.

I'm not blaming the referee for the result - it's obvious that United were the party who let Liverpool have so much domination and therefore take the win. But Liverpool fans should note that they won't meet up with such non-combative midfields every week, nor will they meet with such co-operative refereeing. I look forward to the rest of the season.......

  5. i like your analysis evra.you are the best left back in the world, fearless though and attacking.you dnt respect any striker.i think the team was lacking in midfield and blunt strikeforce.giggs didnt show up the usual way, rooney must lose a bit of weight to his usual body when he came to trafford.he is tiring so easily.my man of the match is benayoun not torres as all analysts wld want to say.he was a thorn in man u flesh.fergie ddnt know how to neutralise him.

  9. And just to add....if you were asked before the game who might get sent off? You'd have picked Vidic and Mascherano! Although I think Carragher was lucky not to join them.

  10. Putting my loyalties to one side for a minute, it must be said that on the day Liverpool desrved the 3 points. That's just how it goes. It doesn't mean there's a crisis at Old Trafford, nor that Liverpool are back in contention for anything, yet.
Anyone with any knowledge of football will know that United and Liverpool are two of the top club teams in the world, each with a proud history, intense rivalry and passionate fan base. ( As we see on these boards all too often). Torres is a top class striker and took his chance very well.
I still think that over the course of the season, United will triumph and finally break Liverpools record, but only a fool would count Liverpool out this early in the season. There's still a long way to go and a lot of points to be won and lost.

  11. 8..Man U Forever Torres was only 80% fit..fact..and your logic is somewhat strange..really only 1 nil..does that mean that if you discount the 1st goal too then it wouldve ended nil nil..or if say Owen had managed to somehow work out where the Liverpool goal was put one past Reina..you wouldve won one nil..thing is he didnt and it was 2-0..do you understand??

dumlew comment 6, your comment shows really your knowledge of football (nil), Torres is probably one of if not the best striker in the world at the minute, he was limited to one chance which credit due was a world class finish, ferdinand again had Torres in his pocket for the rest of the 90 mins, not bad for a 30 year old coke head who if were all honest all his best days are behind him, so when its put in perspective yes Liverpool won 2-0, the second goal was scored when everbody except van der saar were in Liverpools half so really it was only 1-0, we were second rate and didnt really turn up (dont know why), if Liverpool fans really believe they can still win the title they are stupid, they are second rate and will struggle to finish in the champions league places, I would rather be in our position than Liverpools, at the end of the season when Liverpool are empty handed again what then, will next season be your season, please come on wake up bindippers your club is now second rate because financially you cant compete with the big bpys (Man City, Chelsea and Man U) your club is s h i t, end of story, you cant live on history.
