Ferguson: Goal didn`t save my job

Tue, 27 Oct 11:19:11 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson does not believe Barnsley boss Mark Robins' winner for Manchester United in their FA Cup third-round clash with Nottingham Forest back in 1990 saved the Scot`s job.

Robins has gone down in United folklore as the man who rescued Ferguson, who was under immense pressure after failing to land a trophy in his three previous seasons in charge at Old Trafford.

Ferguson told United's official club website: "It was an important goal, don't get me wrong, and who's to say what would have happened without it, but I don't think it saved my job.

"You never know in football. Who's to say how the club would have reacted if we'd lost and if crowds had tumbled? Although it was unusual for United crowds to do that.

"One thing's for sure though - Bobby Charlton would not have let it (my sacking) happen. He knows better than anyone the heartbeat of this football club. This football club needed the foundation of youth and we were doing some great work there. Bobby knew we were on the right road."

Ferguson, full of admiration for Robins' work as manager of Rotherham and now Barnsley, added: "He did a great job at Rotherham. They were going into administration and it's not easy if that happens because you can't get any players."

  3. I don't think he is saying it as a snipe.

He's saying it because he was under the impression the club valued him(Edwards/Charlton) .However imo it certainly did save him.
I remember at the time i was of the opinion this guys only got a matter of a few games...he's useless.

Then of course came the Cantona signing and we are were we are !!!

But that was when most of the fans supported other clubs........remarkable how many people now support Chelsea too....for the first 35 year of my life i would be hard pressed to meet anyone in my town that was a Chelsea fan.....now their everywhere.............

I was a united fan when all we looked forward to was the FA cup run.......i have no affiliation with glory hunting two faced scum.....

and its just sank in that i am indeed missing Ronaldo........its not the same.... and watching Berba every week praying for him to show some of his class just makes it worse.

We will go into decline if we don't buy a world class striker and midfielder in JANUARY......we seen on Sunday this team just isn't up for it......we need a hero and Berba doesn't inspire the team to fiht for the ball to give him cos he's @#$%
