The former world number two has slumped to number 273 in the world following a spate of injuries and lost form but beat his fellow qualifier 4-6 6-4 6-1 in one hour and 43 minutes to move on.

The last time he reached the last eight of an ATP event was in Washington in August 2009 and he will now face second-seed Juan Martin del Potro in the quarters.

Two-time defending champion Jurgen Melzer also moved on at his home event with a 7-5 6-1 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

"It's nice to come back home and play in front of your home crowd, especially when you have won the tournament two times," said the third seed.

Next up for Melzer will be a clash with South Africa's Kevin Anderson.

Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was involved in a battle with Jarkko Nieminen, when the Finn had to retire with a foot injury trailing 3-6 6-1 3-1.

A couple of seeds crashed out of the event though with fourth seed Radek Stepanek beaten by Daniel Brands of Germany, and eight seed Fabio Fognini ousted by Belgium's Xavier Malisse.
