Hoy beats Hamilton for award

Eurosport - Thu, 27 Nov 15:15:00 2008

Triple Olympic gold medal winner Chris Hoy beat out Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton to be named British sportsman of the year at the 60th Sports Journalists' Association sports awards.

CYCLING Chris Hoy - 0

Hamilton will race Hoy around Wembley Stadium next month as a warm-up for the Race of Champions event.

The 23-year-old Hamilton will be at the wheel of a Mercedes road car while Hoy will cycle on a parallel track constructed over the turf of the national football stadium.

Both men are also among the favourites for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Olympic yachting gold medallist Ben Ainslie was third in the Sports Journalists Award list.

Rebecca Adlington, who twice triumphed in the Water Cube's swimming pool in Beijing, was named sportswoman of the year ahead of world road-race champion and Olympic gold medal winning cyclist Nicole Cooke.

Cooke came in ahead of Olympic 400 metres champion Christine Ohuruogu, who won Britain's only athletics gold in Beijing.

  1. Your point by the way is well taken, criticise Hamilton for not taking part in a self-serving promotional stunt if you like, but if he promotes F1 more constructively instead then surely that's more important. Plus the press for him racing a cyclist is surely enough - F1 vs Man, the ultimate test. Thats still more than the last two champions did.

  2. MP4-23: Are you mad? Do you not Ferrari and Massa are that good that Felipe only lost by one point despite driving the race at Silverstone in reverse gear!

  4. Champions know that success is inevitable; that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. They know that the best way to forecast the future is to create it.
Your pain is our gain, keep em coming stiffs.

  5. @ [53] and [58] console each other, scratch each other’s back, like a pack of wild dogs in the desert, one on it’s own is useless, no balls, screw- less, no good, you are helping in no small way with your input to L.H dislike and ridicule, you are sure fooling your selves if you think that this wave of dislike is mostly non BRITISH,
Can you honestly imagine any driver being voted 2nd or lower in his own country?

  6. MP4-23: Lewis may not be competing in the race of champions (and webber has shown the follies of competing in something in the off season), but didn't bernie say that Alonso was the worst champion the sport had had for his lack of promotional work?

  8. hello my little f1 bum chums it marnio here from peru.
mr hamiltons son say he stay with mclaren men for life. that nice for him but what do mclaren men say? you see mclaren is now german owned. the parent company is the mercedes benz which is the german. the engine is the german engine. everything about the team is the german. mr hamiltons son now the swiss gentleman he eat much cheese and sings in the morning at mountains. mr hamiltons father is also now the swiss man. in fact there nothing british about this team at all. even the man who tidy up the garage after the race has moved to switzerland with his mother. switzerland is owned by the german. my friends the whole team is GERMAN - and guess what - so is mr glock. now you see why the time stand still for mr glock on the last lap. like he in the time warp. not even the people abducted by the alien lose the amount of time he lost on that last lap. IT IS A DISGRACE!!!

  9. Have anybody ever seen a world champion being lowered by wires? That was something I will never forget 2008 is going to stand out not only for the way the WDC was won but for the WDC himself being put true such ridicule

  10. stivsf1,
You keep having ago at the current World Champion for not taking part in some media stunt show, but I don't see Alonso or Raikkonen taking part either, also you keep slagging him off saying he should stay out of the spotlight sometimes and when he does you still slag him off, the poor multi millionaire World Champion can't win.
    Your pain is our gain.

  12. @ [47] L.H WDC 2008 in a worm-up to the race of champions will take part in a race driving a MERCEDES road car against a PEDAL BIKE he is not going to take part in the race of champions itself, 47 do you understand this English? This is the biggest joke F1 ever seen, if I was a fan of his I would not want anything to do with such ridicule, then after the race straight to the BBC award and just in case people’s dislike of him takes over again there will be HRH ELISABETH which always have plenty to give each year

  16. stivsf1: type a sentence that makes sense will you? Your last statement(apart from the last statement) was a shambles and almost un-readable.
I support McLaren and Lewis Hamilton because they are not Ferrari and that they don't get ANY favouritism from the FIA so the injustice drove me towards them. The other thing is that without Lewis Hamilton, you would have an even more sad life as you would have nobody to whine at like a little girl. He ALONE has kept F1 alive over the last 2 seasons. It was as BORING without him as it is boring to listen to you go on and on and on.
Lewis Hamilton WORLD CHAMPION! Has a nice sound to it!

  17. stivsf1,
    2008 Olympics 4th out of 87 countries with 19 gold medals=UK
Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, Andy Murray & Laura Robson all from, yes you guessed it the UK,
and this is just a hint of what we've got going on in the UK to support without the FIA Formula One World Champion.

  18. @44 lucky bunny or not-a fraction of luck or not congratulations to L.H and to you for the WDC win. If the FIA, if this, and if that L.H won it and that’s it, I can mention half-a-dozen if’s that Massa could have won it but he didn’t. As I said before I fully understand your state of mind and the position you and many found your self’s in YOU ARE SUPPORTING A DRIVER AND TEAM BECAUSE YOU CANNOT DO OTHER WISE, I am sure that if there was anything else to support you will be a lot more happy

    From stivsf1, on Fri 28 Nov 12:27PM
  19. stivsf1: you obviously have a problem. The ONLY reason Lewis Hamilton had to do anything at Brazil is because Massa was allowed to do anything he wanted and get away with it. This plus the FIA's obvious anti-Hamilton stance helped Ferrari stay in the title race. It would have been over in China if it wasn't for the FIA.

  20. Congratulations to Lewis the rightful Champion of 2008, I tried my best but in the end my best wasn't good enough.
I'm sorry that my good friend Timo is telling such outrageous lies I think he feels more hurt than I do because he tried so hard to help me win by staying out on those worn dry tyres and it nearly paid off, but as the rain got heavier he couldn't keep it on the racing line.
We are having a bit of trouble with the Kers system on our car so I'm told, so alot of work has got to be done between now and March, but I will try and keep you all posted.
