Eurosport - Thu, 27 Nov 15:15:00 2008

Triple Olympic gold medal winner Chris Hoy beat out Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton to be named British sportsman of the year at the 60th Sports Journalists' Association sports awards.

CYCLING Chris Hoy - 0

Hamilton will race Hoy around Wembley Stadium next month as a warm-up for the Race of Champions event.

The 23-year-old Hamilton will be at the wheel of a Mercedes road car while Hoy will cycle on a parallel track constructed over the turf of the national football stadium.

Both men are also among the favourites for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Olympic yachting gold medallist Ben Ainslie was third in the Sports Journalists Award list.

Rebecca Adlington, who twice triumphed in the Water Cube's swimming pool in Beijing, was named sportswoman of the year ahead of world road-race champion and Olympic gold medal winning cyclist Nicole Cooke.

Cooke came in ahead of Olympic 400 metres champion Christine Ohuruogu, who won Britain's only athletics gold in Beijing.

  1. @ [40] I have no doubt and can understand your frantic joy after such along wait and very nearly loosing it again what makes L.H win even more enjoyable to you must surely be the fact that you was lucky to have your heart restart its beating after stopping for a few seconds on the last 2 corners in Brazil also the fact that there is hardly anything left to support in the UK

  2. I vote for Ron Dennis as sports personality. He kept his dignity whilst all the competition were foaming at the mouth and throwing all the 5hit they could find. Even sent $100m to Max to help support his life style. Lewis can wait till next year.

  3. Rav A: Hamilton was consistently the best driver on the track and THAT is why he's the champion. He did it all on his own and certainly without the help of the FIA which tried their best to help your guys. Grow up and realise it's over now. Hamilton IS the World Champion........brilliant!
P.S. loving the hurt you Ferrari fans are showing in your posts. It makes Hamilton's win even more enjoyable. Thanks for the posts!

  5. 25 - "The boy has done what nobody else has done in F1". You're definitely right. We know of no champion with only five races won over 18. We konw of no champion who almost finished 6th in the last race and won a championship with the help of a third party.

  6. The best award for Hamilton would be a framed picture of Teamo Blob to put on his wall. That would remind him to remain grateful for the Blob all his life.

  7. Incidently, Hoy fully deserves his award as he has been spectaular this past year and set a new benchmark. In 2007 Hamilton was spectacular, in 2008 he wasn't quite as impressive.

  8. Jenni: He has done what no one else has done - won the World Championship in only his second year of top class racing. Jacques' WDC aside given his vast experience from the US scene, it is a feat that no one else has achieved. And as for his age, he is the youngest winner ever, so its not entirely irrelevent. And apart from that, at 22 he was a little late to the game since at 22 both Button and Alonso had two years under their belts. Vettel will have had three. Massa and Raikkonen had already done a full season. Mclaren fine tuned this guy in the lower ranks to be an F1 racer and he is. Maybe if Ferrari had put the same effort into Massa instead of sending him to Sauber he'd have been a championship contender sooner and Maranello's very own prodigy.

You mean he's only won nine races since he came to F1, despite having the best car?
Or do you mean cause of his age? As everyone knows he's had the backing & cash of Ron Dennis behind him since he was a kid so in a way that makes his age irrelevant.

  11. Rebecca Adlington? Er granted she has done exceptionally well in these 2 races and one Games but Hoy has performed at World Champion level consistantly for a number or years so gets my vote. Pointing at the number of golds Rebecca won as reason? Hmmmmm, how many has Hoy got?

  13. So why not Rebecca Adlington. Rebecca is Britain's first Olympic swimming champion since 1988, the first British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals since 1908 and so Great Britain's most successful Olympic swimmer in 100 years. We have had other successful cyclists and other racing car drivers in the last 100 years but not a swimmer of this calibre, or is it becasue swimming unlike motor racing is not "sexy", reagrdelss of who is more deserving!

  14. I'm sick of people criticising Murray's personality. Has anyone here ever met him ? didn't think so. Don't judge people on stories written to sell newspapers. People bounce off these forums like moths against lightbulbs.....

  15. Whoever wins Sports personality of the year its just got to be a cyclist, they have been so dominant this year. From Mark Cavendish winning 2 stages in the Giro and 4 stages in the tour to Hoy winning 3 golds at the Olympics to Nicole Cooke who is world champion and Olympic champion in road racing in the same year, they are all phenominal.
But its Hoy for me, he will get my vote!

  16. @ THE PROF and all worried posters on this page [1] the times voters will not take part [vote] again on any poll [2] HRH Elisabeth will sure give him something this country is so full of such give away things

  17. Hoy deserves it. As much as I like Hamilton, he is still relatively young whereas Hoy has battled through with minimal grants and lottery funding and has show commitment to GB for many years. His medals at the Olympics were an inspiration. Not Printable is right though. The paralypic swimmer Eleanor Simmonds stood out a mile from the able bodied contenders for personality. She was a true star!

  18. If it was the USA, Lewis Hamilton would have won it. The boy has done what nobody else has done in F1. Before you tear off my head though, I know, yes I know this is the UK!

  19. Hey the Prof. It's for the SPORTSMAN. That word has more than one meaning. So you can forget Murray

  20. Patrick W.said: "YOU SILLY BRITS....ITS GOTTA BE HAMILTON! NO BRAINER!!!!"

He must be a sad person with a very small brain if any at all! Chris Hoy trained hard years in and out and achieved so much at least in the past four years and was absolutley amazing this year. He definitely deserves th award much much more than Hamilton who will surely win the award in a few years time.
