How medals would change F1 history

Eurosport - Thu, 27 Nov 10:22:00 2008

If Bernie Ecclestone's 'gold medals' proposal for scoring in Formula One was retrospectively applied, it would change the landscape of the sport's history.

1992 Williams Nigel Mansell - 0

In the 58 World Championships since the category's modern inception in 1950, the Olympic Games-style system would have crowned a different champion up to 12 times.

The most recent example is this year, when runner-up Felipe Massa won six races compared with Lewis Hamilton's five. Under Ecclestone's proposed regime, the Brazilian would now be 2008 world champion.

The big winners of the F1 bigwig's plan, however, would have been Nigel Mansell (champion in 1992) and Jim Clark (1963 and 1965). In both cases, the drivers would each have won two extra titles.

The biggest loser, on the other hand, would be Nelson Piquet, who according to the 'medals' system would not have won any of his three titles in the 80s.

Alain Prost would have won five titles instead of four, and Keke Rosberg - because he only won a single 'gold medal' - would not have been crowned champion in 1982.

Indeed, under Ecclestone's plan, the Finn and father of Williams driver Nico Rosberg would have finished the drivers' championship just sixth.

  1. pond.simba: Do you plan on saying a similar thing to the Timo Glock and Anthony Hamilton impersonators? Or is it ok for them and its just because it was a Ferrari post that you objected so much?

  3. Congratulations to Lewis the rightful Champion of 2008, I tried my best but in the end my best wasn't good enough.
I'm sorry that my good friend Timo is telling such outrageous lies I think he feels more hurt than I do because he tried so hard to help me win by staying out on those worn dry tyres and it nearly paid off, but as the rain got heavier he couldn't keep it on the racing line.
We are having a bit of trouble with the Kers system on our car so I'm told, so alot of work has got to be done between now and March, but I will try and keep you all posted.
I think the medals system is a really stupid idea.

  4. i don't like people playing down the fun part of pitting, overtaking over pit stops is every part as exciting as overtaking on the track~ though scrapping that would no doubt leaves only one route for overtaking~ but that also makes the sport less mathematic, scientisfic and strategic as it is best known for. trashing pit stops will kill the identity of the sport~ so if anyone is suggest trashing the pit stop~ then maybe they should have a hard long thinking about it.

  7. Exciting racing is, in my book, defined by overtaking, that is changes in the lead (or positions lower down the order) carried out under racing conditions (not 'passing' in the pits). Just such a pass, for example, was Lewis Hamilton's (Mclaren) pass on Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) at the 2007 Italian GP at Monza, for 2nd place. Passes made in the pits, are in their way, exciting, too, but for racing purists, passes 'on the road' count for more. There's no doubt, overtaking is incredibly difficult in F1. Just look at the trouble a front running car has in lapping a back marker, if the driver of the car being lapped is uncooperative! That situation goes on for 2-3-4 laps, sometimes! I think passing in F1 in 2009 is going to be as difficult as it has been for the last 20-odd years, (think back to the mid eighties, Picquet-Mansell, battles), now they have carbon brakes, semi-auto gears, and devices on the cars designed to make it hard to follow another car close up. I agree with pdmcosworth in some ways, take away the driver aids, lengthen the braking distances, make the pit stops much longer (10 mph in the pit lane, then the 'one-stop' merchants will have a punt at it!), clean up the cars so that drivers can 'slipstream' again, then Mr Ecclestone can tinker with the points system, when the racing's fairer and F1 is excting again!

  8. c.bannister508 thanks for your reply much appreciated and understood i can only apologise that its taking me so long to respond but unfortunatly i have been at work. Anyway i understand your point about the difference in time between points, however that is just tough luck if you finsh 100th of a second behind first place its just too bad really because on some races its hard to overtake the person in first (mansell vs senna monaco) just to give you an example. Surly you have to agree that the race winner isnt rewarded enough for a race win? i certainly wouldnt want the driver who finishes second every race of the season to become champion, that just wouldnt be right, however, i do agree with you that every driver that finishes the race should score points i couldnt agree with you more on that one. i would like to see the scoring system a bit like moto gp or touring cars what about yourself?

  10. I dont understand why the drivers arent pushing more for the wins anyway, this is what they have spent their whole lives building up to and yet they seem to lose interest when they cant get passed somebody.
In motorcycle racing points awarded to 15th place, 1st=25, 2nd=20 and im not sure about the rest of them. My point is that this year Valentino Rossi had won the championship by almost four whole races, and yet not at one point in the whole season did he think to himself 'Well, Ive qualified really badly, Ive won the championship, maybe I will just ride around for the afternoon'. That is what F1 needs, people who really want to be there to win races. Just like Lewis was in 2007, well for a little bit anyway.

What it says about the Championship is that while a system exists sensible people with huge amounts of money at stake, people to pay etc will do what it takes to exploit that system. Nothing new there - it happens in all sports. My own view is that 'championships' can tend to spoil an individual event as most people consider a championship more important. Well, I think that's a fact of life and there's not much we can do about it other than make the scoring fairer. I've always thought that points should be awarded to all who finish a GP but should a driver who wins get four more points than the 2nd place driver who might have lost by only 100th of a second. If the 3rd place then gets only two points less than 2nd but was 35 secs behind how fair is that?
I don't have an answer but, while I understand what Bernie is trying to do here I can't agree with him on the medal business. I'm not anti-Bernie at all.. I think he has and continues to do a fantastic job keeping F1 at the level it's reached. But a championship is about overall performance throughout a season and not just winning races, that's what you get a cup (or large replica of sponsors logo) for.

PS: Scrap all drive through chicanes and time penalties. The black flag worked well except on the last few laps, so we could see a bit more fun at the end.. something to wake us up or bring us in from the garden!

  12. this medal system isnt done for entertain reasons, its done to make sure the right man (the best driver) wins the title, and that simply didnt happen this year. Last race of the season lewis was just trying to finish 5th, i mean come on what does that say about our champion and championship.

    CHANGE WE DON'T NEED

    From lewis.great, on Thu 27 Nov 10:55AM
  16. I cannot believe what Ecclestone is trying to do here. Bear with me everyone. We have endured years of boring racing at the height of the Ferrari / Schumacher years, overtaking in the pit lane, processional races with Ruebens used as a mobile chicane, tactics at the start that Schumacher employed that had Lewis tried this year would not have been tolerated. Just what did Ecclestone do about that - yes the answer is nothing. Strangely enough for the first time in over a decade a McLaren driver wins the Championship, after 2 of the most exciting seasons going and what does this senile old fool do make changes.

Now look at it this way this medal system means that a) the championship could be over as a spectacle just after mid season, b) just why would the top teams have 2 top drivers when in effect having them compete with one another means they could be damaging their employers chances of winning a Championship, c) just what is in this for the mid table down teams and d) a driver A of a team wins 3 races and comes second in all the others, however another driver B wins 4 and doesn't finish any other races and what's more one of those victories was awarded to B by the stewards from A. Who do you think deserves to win the Championship. I don't care who driver A drives for it is him who deserves to win.

I'm very suspicious of the claims that he has the support of all the teams, as I said earlier just what is in this fo rthe likes of Red Bull and Force India. Tell you what though there's an awful lot in it for the FIA to be able to manipulate who they want to win the Drivers and Constructors Championships.

This is just the meddling of a complete idiot, let's face it this is the man who did not know his wife had a PR company, had moved out and wanted a divorce. Really got a grip on reality hasn't he.

Good way to get some publicity bernie, it a rubbish idea bernie must be losing it no wonder his missis is divorcing him if he comes up with rubbish ideas like this one, talking of bernie that reminds me the smaller teams what would be the point under this new system, there are at best 4 teams who would finish in the top 3, whats the point of all the other teams showing up under this plan. It like replacing the airbag in your car with a bomb, if you crash your cars going to explode to give you an incentive to drive safer, its daft.

  20. So Massa won 6 last year and Hamilton won 5, maybe they should stop giving Hamilton's wins to Massa then and there wouldn't be a problem. Massa can only win from the front row of the grid anyway.
