UEFA Cup - King out for Tottenham

Ledley King has been rested for Tottenham Hotspur's UEFA Cup Group D clash at NEC Nijmegen.

Spurs captain King (pictured) has a long-standing knee complaint and rarely plays consecutive matches, with Michael Dawson set to partner Jonathan Woodgate at centre-half.

Boss Harry Redknapp is also concerned about Scotland right-back Alan Hutton, who has a potentially serious foot problem.

"Alan Hutton has picked up an injury that could keep him out for quite a long time," Redknapp said.

"We have to be careful with the squad, which is why there are quite a few players... who I won't be taking chances with on Thursday."

Croatia playmaker Luka Modric (groin) and Mexican winger Giovani dos Santos (ankle) also miss the tie.

Jermaine Jenas travels despite picking up a toe injury.

Youngsters John Bostock, Adam Smith, John Obika and Ryan Mason are all included in the squad, as is 17-year-old Iraqi-born midfielder Yaser Kasim.

Roman Pavlyuchenko and Vedran Corluka are cup-tied.

NEC, meanwhile, will have to do without on-loan Fulham striker Collins John, who is hampered by the injury problems that saw loan spells at Watford and Leicester fail to convince the clubs to sign him permanently.

"I expect he will not make his debut until the New Year," coach Mario Been told Voetbal International.

"It's very sad. If you can attract a player of his calibre, it is a shame when he cannot play.

"This past week, he has had to show what he can do in training again. I said to [assistant boss Ron de Groot], 'Wow - this guy has so much talent!

"Our coach was really impressed with his strength and pace, but he is far from match fit."

  5. Harry, will concentrate on the league and the carling cup (a route back to europe), so he may as well use the Uefa cup ato look at fringe players. He'll then get rid of the drift wood (or as much as possible) and bringin what he wants.
