Premier League - Paper Round: Vidic close to exit

Eurosport - Fri, 27 Nov 09:01:00 2009

Nemanja Vidic's increasingly unhappy time at Manchester United may soon be over after the Serb defender was told he will not offered a new contract until 2011.

No United players will receive pay rises until they enter the final year of their contracts with the club looking to cut costs.

With just Wayne Rooney regarded as a special case, it is a high-risk strategy and one that may prompt Vidic to quit Old Trafford at the end of the season, when he still has two years left on his current deal. Barcelona are still swirling like vultures.

Of course, that is the view of just one paper - The Sun. Others, including the Daily Star and The Independent, prefer to focus on the story that Vidic is going nowhere and that he is committed to the Red Devils' cause for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, United will sign 17-year-old Welsh wonderkid Adam Mathews once the transfer window opens in the New Year. The Premier League champions have beaten Arsenal to the signature of the Cardiff defender, who will cost £5 million plus further payments as he progresses through the ranks. (The Sun)

Elsewhere, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has tied up a £4m deal to take Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra to White Hart Lane in January, as Spurs look to bring in cover for their injury-prone back line. (The Sun)

But Redknapp will face stiff competition from Liverpool and Barcelona in their bid to lure Patrick Vieira back to north London.

The former Arsenal ace has dropped down the pecking order at Jose Mourinho's Internazionale, and knows he must leave Italy if he is to win back his place in France's World Cup squad.

Redknapp was after the 33-year-old in the summer and is keen to resuscitate the deal in January, with Liverpool and Barca also in the hunt. (Daily Telegraph)

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan has admitted he would relish the chance to return to the Premier League, despite his failure to make an impact with Manchester United.

Since leaving Old Trafford, the Uruguay striker has become one of the most prolific goalgetters in the Europe, and he is keen to bring back his talent to England, although he claims he has "nothing to prove". (Daily Mirror)

In other news, new Portsmouth boss Avram Grant has been told the club's transfer ban will be lifted and promised cash to splash in the January sales. (Daily Mirror)

Aston Villa are tracking Portuguese right-back Miguel, who wants to leave Valencia in January after a bust-up with boss Unai Emery. (The Sun)

Everton's week has gone from bad to worse with news that city rivals Liverpool do not want to share their ground with them.

The Toffees' plans for a new stadium were thrown out by the government yesterday, forcing the club to consider the option of a ground-share with their neighbours.

But the Reds are not interested, despite their own problems in getting a new stadium off the ground, and the Anfield club have snubbed the Blues. (The Independent)

And finally, Frank Lampard walked out of Marijana Kovacevic's placenta clinic in Belgrade after just an hour of treatment. Apparently, the Chelsea midfielder decided that rubbing horse placenta on his thigh injury was not the thing for him and returned to England immediately. (The Independent)
