The 31-year-old McIlroy eased to the title in front of Kenyan Richard Kiplagat in a winning time of 1:49.61.

McIlroy is hoping that the win will help propel him into the British over 1500m team for the World Indoor Championships in Valencia and to his second career Olympic appearance in Beijing.

The 15-year-old Ciara Mageean, meanwhile, set a new Irish junior indoors record in a comfortable win in the women's 1500m.

Mageean's time of 4:24.07 was nearly three seconds better than second-place Roseanne Galligan as Kerry Harty took third.

American Rae Edwards won the 60m in 6.70 seconds, pipping his compatriot Josh Norman by one second.

On Saturday, Gareth Turnbull won the 3000m title with a fine front-running showing.

The 26-year-old Turnbull, who was cleared of a positive testosterone test in 2006, finished in a winning time of eight minutes and 6.10 seconds, nearly four seconds faster than second-placed Liam Reale.

Briton Adam Bowden took third in the evening's main event.

Kelly Proper claimed an Irish record in the women's long jump (6.28m) and Robert Heffernan set a new Irish mark in the 5K walk.

Heffernan trimmed his own national record by two seconds finishing the race in 18:51, a full two minutes faster than compatriot Jamie Costin.

Slovakia's Zuzanna Malakova was fastest in the women's 3k walk at 12:55.55, with Ireland's Olive Loughnane second nearly ten seconds behind her.

Britain's Rebecca Peake won the shot-put with a 15.91m effort finishing in front of home hopeful Eva Massey, who was second at 15.39m.
