Championship - Round-up: Reading beat Wolves

Eurosport - Wed, 28 Jan 15:28:00 2009

Wolves' lead at the top of the Championship now stands at just two points after they were beaten 1-0 by Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

FOOTBALL Reading Kevin Doyle - 0

The Royals took an early lead when Chris Armstrong swung in a cross which Wolves defender Neill Collins accidentally flicked into his own net.

Reading should have doubled their advantage just before the break but James Harper could only shoot straight at Wayne Hennessey from close range.

Collins' miserable night came to a premature end as he was sent off late on for foul and abusive language in injury-time.

Birmingham moved to within four points of Wolves as they overcame a stubborn Derby side 1-0 at St Andrews.

City struggled to break Derby down in a scrappy first half but Lee Carsley headed the winner just before the hour when he headed home a Hameur Bouazza cross.

Matthew Spring's first-half strike was enough to give Charlton their first win in 19 matches against Crystal Palace at The Valley.

Lloyd Sam found Spring in the box and he thumped a drive past Julian Speroni to give the hosts their first league win since October 4.

Swansea followed up last week's win over FA Cup holders Portsmouth by thumping fellow play-off hopefuls Preston 4-1 at the Liberty Stadium.

The Swans took the lead two minutes in through Jordi Gomez before Jason Scotland doubled the hosts' lead after 29 minutes.

Guillem Bauza added a third and Alan Tate struck late on to give Swansea before Chris Brown scored a consolation for Preston.

Marek Saganowski's late goal denied Bryan Gunn his first win as permanent Norwich boss as his side drew 2-2 with Southampton at Carrow Road.

Mark Fotheringham's first Norwich goal gave the Canaries the lead before Wesley Hoolahan doubled their advantage with a 35-yard strike.

Kayne McLaggon pulled one back for the Saints and the visitors snatched a point 12 minutes from time with Saganowski's header

Sheffield United's play-off hopes suffered a blow as they were beaten by Doncaster in the South Yorkshire derby at Bramall Lane thanks to a James O'Connor goal.

QPR leapfrogged Burnley into seventh as they beat Blackpool 3-0 at Bloomfield Road, with Heidar Helguson's double the highlight.

Helguson headed home Wayne Routledge's cross to put QPR ahead 17 minutes in and he doubled Rangers' advantage with a penalty just before the hour after Ian Evatt had fouled the striker in the box.

Hogan Ephraim's last-minute goal rounded things off for the west London side.

Nottingham Forest came from behind to beat 10-man Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at the City Ground.

Jermaine Johnson picked up a Mark Beevers knock down to slot past Paul Smith and give the Owls the lead before Forest equalised through Nathan Tyson.

Wednesday striker Francis Jeffers was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Joe Heath and Forest made their numerical advantage count when Luke Chambers headed the winner with 15 minutes left.

Ipswich extended their unbeaten run to four matches as they beat Barnsley 2-1 at Oakwell.

Jon Stead drilled a low drive past Heinz Muller to break the deadlock after eight minutes before he added his second two minutes later with a fortunate deflection.

Daniel Bogdanovic marked his debut with a consolation goal for the Tykes early in the second half.

Michael McIndoe and Liam Fontaine were on target for Bristol City in the second half as they beat Plymouth 2-0 at Home Park while one goal from Jobi McAnuff and two from Tamas Priskin gave Watford a 3-0 home win against Burnley.

  3. COMMENT NO.15: reading were behind yes, but its not because they have been playing well why they made up the ground, its cause wolves have played s@@@.
Wolves will have another eleven unbeaten run, and extend the lead out again.
Reading have come 2 points behind with average form.
Wolves have maintained the no.1 spot with appauling form.
Thats the difference between the winners and second.

  4. Yep the wolves fan is right they had 7 players out and reading won at wolves. Yet they still loose at reading when reading have one first team defender playing...including the keeper. But at least they scored the winner....yep they'll be champions alright

  5. "its all about consistency, and wolves have it, maybe a couple of blips, but "

    -Surely thats contradiction in terms!
Reading are all over the Championship title now, and its 50/50 between Birmingham and Wolves for 2nd spot looking at the form of the teams. Reading were 10 points behinfd Wolves a few months ago, thats now only 2. Its clear who the form team are, and the goal difference says it all.

Noel Hunt and Adam Federici ( with his distribution) were fantasic last night.

    Up the RRRRRzzzzz!

  6. What did I tell you Wolves fans?
By the end of Feb we shall be outsiude the top two.
The defence is shipping goals for fun, lacking in confidence, pannick is setting in, we have seen it all before so get ready for dissapointment.
When did Wolves do anything from dead ball situations, they can't even take a corner and as for free kicks arround the box, waste of time. The only good news is that Baggies lost 5-0.

  7. what the f*ck are you reading scum on about?
wolves got beat by you at molineux due to 7 first team players bieng out of the starting eleven!
And as for last night, wolves should have at least got a point out of it.
    Reading for the title??? bull@#$%!!!
its all about consistency, and wolves have it, maybe a couple of blips, but two spells of around eleven unbeaten speaks for itself............just like the number 1 next to the position they are in the table.
Wolves have been top since october......get there and stay there before you start claiming you are gonna win anything....scummers

  13. i would love to say a reading win just a little bit worried about the defence with Liam Rosenior and Bikey out with a new debet to Kelly at right back and dubz at centre back may not be up to the standard of blake.. if the midfield closes off the wing play of wolves i would say a 2-1 win to reading.. draw isnt good for reading so will go out at home for the win.. i heard this looks likey to be the team for reading

  14. No Chance - Reading have only conceded 8 league goals at home this season, and have scored an average of over 2.5 at home. Also they've won their previous two meetings with the other "big" teams in the championship, Wolves and Birmingham, 3-0 and 3-1 so they've a habit of rising to the occasion as it were! A home win all the way tonight and Reading for the Championship title...

    From cowboy8327, on Tue 27 Jan 2:10PM
  15. 4 0 to the wolves
