Contador wins another San Luis stage

Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank) has won his second stage at this year's Tour de San Luis but American Levi Leipheimer has held onto his overall lead in Argentina.

Alberto Contador - 0

Contador won stage five atop the Mirador del Sol after an attack in the final kilometre but Leipheimer (Omega Pharma - Quick-Step) reacted well to finish third in the stage just five seconds back.

That means Leipheimer holds a 46 seconds lead over multiple Grand Tour winner Contador with just two stages remaining.

"It wasn't an easy stage - the wind was really strong in the first part of the race and the guys did a great job to control the race." Leipheimer said.

"The last climb was hard, 7km of uphill with high percentage. We managed to control the race very well from the beginning. In the last climb Contador attacked at about 3km to go. At that point I took the lead and I only thought about the GC. I'm really happy about our race today. Now we have to control the race two more days.

"Tomorrow it won't be easy, the stage is long and difficult especially at the beginning but we have to do it. We are really close to the victory. It will be an extra motivation for everybody."

Daniel Diaz (San Luis Somos Todos) finished second in the stage and is now third but Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Stefan Schumacher (Christina Watches-Ofone) lost time on the mountain and have dropped to fourth and fifth in the GC respectively.

Stage six is the longest of the Tour and contains a category one climb as the riders make the 201km trek from La Toma to Merlo.

  1. There are a lot more cyclists who would have to be kicked out before Contador based on the amount of drugs found in their specimens!

  10. sad to see Ricco Jr still in the top 5. His entire team basically threw him under the bus when he got caught. I can't imagine him staying clean and he should be gone permanently by year end.
