FA Cup - Brighton send Newcastle packing

Brighton and Hove Albion pulled off an FA Cup fourth round shock as they beat Newcastle 1-0 at the Amex Stadium.

2012 Brighton-Newcastle - 0

Will Buckley's 77th-minute shot went in off Newcastle defender Mike Williamson, who will be 'credited' with an own-goal.

The Championship side gave a superb account of themselves, but were fortunate not to concede a late penalty when Lewis Dunk used his hands to block a Yohan Cabaye shot.

Cabaye could find himself in trouble with the FA after appearing to kick out at Adam El-Abd in an incident not spotted by referee Lee Probert.

The first half was a largely tedious spectacle, with both sides' reluctance to play a high, pressing game resulting in long periods of unchallenged sideways passing.

While Brighton held their own admirably, it made for snooze-inducing 'entertainment'.

The best chances fell to Leon Best. After 10 minutes, he produced some superb control to trap a long ball, then fired just wide on the turn.

Two minutes later, he found himself with a free header from Ameobi's nod across the six-yard box, but could only put the ball over.

Danny Simpson also had an opportunity when played in by Hatem Ben Arfa, but Peter Brezovan was equal to the full-back's shot.

The absence of top scorer Demba Ba and new signing Papiss Cisse at the African Cup of Nations was keenly felt, as Ameobi and Best struggled for a way through.

On 52 minutes, Ameobi spun away from Gordon Greer and found Best, whose shot was saved by Brezovan.

The resultant corner came out to Danny Guthrie, whose long-range volley was deflected over - and from that corner the ball dropped to Ameobi, whose left-foot shot again brought the best out of Brezovan.

As time wore on, Newcastle's challenge faded. On 70 minutes, Craig Mackail-Smith cracked a 25-yard shot that Tim Krul tipped behind for a corner.

Then came the goal, as Buckley embarked on a mazy dribble inside from the left and saw Williamson divert the ball past Krul.

Newcastle tried to mount a comeback, and should have had the opportunity to level from 12 yards when Dunk handled Cabaye's 89th-minute shot. But fortune smiled on Brighton, who take their place in Sunday's fifth-round draw.

  1. Brighton pull Newcastle down to their level and beat them. the toon were awfull - Best and Ameobi couldnt find away through a lower league defence, what a sad endictment of their skill ( or lack of it) Are there any defenders in the Premier league terrified by Ameobi and Best ????????......... dont think so ! I would never put my mortgage on them scoring more 10 goals a season. Where was Lovekands ? surely he was worth a run at them Its down to Demba and Cisse now
