FA Cup - Giant-killing Crawley strike again at Hull

Sat, 28 Jan 16:57:00 2012

Crawley Town reached the fifth round of the FA Cup for the second year in a row after they shocked Hull City with a 1-0 win at the KC Stadium.

2011-12 FA Cup Crawley Matt Tubbs scores against Hull - 0

Matt Tubbs scored the only goal of the game for the promotion-chasing League Two side on 57 minutes.

The striker sprang the Hull offside trap after a ball through from Sergio Torres and surged forward before dispatching a cool finish past goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

The goal was Tubbs's 18th of the season and his eighth in his last nine FA Cup appearances.

There are 45 places in the Football League pyramid between Championship play-off chasers Hull and the upwardly-mobile Reds of Crawley, but it is the West Sussex side who will once again be in the last 16 of the competition. At the same stage last season they were eliminated after a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.

The closest to an upset anywhere else among the mid-afternoon kick-offs came at Bloomfield Road where Championship side Blackpool left it late to draw 1-1 with League One outfit Sheffield Wednesday.

Clinton Morrison scored his first goal for three-and-a-half months seven minutes into the second half and the Owls looked like they would go on to claim a second consecutive Championship scalp, following their win over West Ham in the third round.

However, Blackpool dragged themselves level in second-half stoppage time from the penalty spot. After Danny Batth fouled Gary Taylor-Fletcher in the area, veteran striker Kevin Phillips powered an emphatic finish from 12 yards into the top corner to book a replay at Hillsborough.

Premier League strugglers Bolton Wanderers were given a morale boost after they came from behind to beat top-flight rivals Swansea City at the Reebok Stadium.

Luke Moore gave the Swans the lead in the 43rd minute as he enjoyed a rare start, but just two minutes later former Swansea midfielder Darren Pratley equalised for the Trotters.

Last season's semi-finalists then went on to secure a place in the fifth-round draw courtesy of Chris Eagles's winner 10 minutes into the second half.

The afternoon's other all-Premier League clash saw Norwich City beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at The Hawthorns.

Grant Holt gave the Canaries the lead with 10 minutes to go before half-time, only for Marc-Antoine Fortune to level after the break.

Things looked to be heading for a replay until Simeon Jackson won the tie for Paul Lambert's side five minutes from time.

Swindon Town's hopes of another giant-killing were ruthlessly snuffed out by Leicester City, who won their tie at the King Power Stadium 2-0.

Jermaine Beckford scored both goals, taking his tally in this season's competition to five following his hat-trick against Nottingham Forest in the fourth round.

Millwall looked to have been on their way out before securing a 1-1 draw against Championship rivals Southampton at the New Den.

Saints took the lead just after the half-hour mark through Rickie Lambert, who was returning from a three-match ban, but Darius Henderson equalised for the Londoners four minutes from time.

Last season's runners-up Stoke City are on the march again after they ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Derby County at Pride Park courtesy of goals in either half from Cameron Jerome and Robert Huth.

Adam Rooney scored twice as Birmingham City romped to a 4-0 win over Sheffield United at Brammall Lane, with Nathan Redmond and Wade Elliott getting the other goals.

Stevenage won the all-League One tie against Notts County at Broadhall Way thanks to an own goal from Damion Stewart.

  17. Are top teams "losing" in the cup to put all their efforts into surviving the position in whatever league they play, Certainly teams like Manchester City/United can't afford to be in too many competitions things like the Premiership and probably the Champions league are important money spinners anything else is just an inconvenience
