FA Cup - Kuyt strikes late as Liverpool beat United

Sat, 28 Jan 14:42:00 2012

Dirk Kuyt scored a late winner as Liverpool beat bitter rivals Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield.

2012 Liverpool-Manchester United Kuyt lighter - 0

The substitute lashed the ball past David De Gea in the 88th minute to complete a memorable week for Liverpool, three days after they reached the Carling Cup final with an aggregate win over Manchester City.

Daniel Agger headed Liverpool in front on 21 minutes after a De Gea mistake, before Park Ji-Sung restored parity with a crisp finish six minutes before half-time.

Kuyt settled an even game after he escaped the attentions of Patrice Evra, ran onto an Andy Carroll flick-on, and found the bottom of the United net to send manager Kenny Dalglish into raptures.

Evra was booed throughout due to his involvement in the Luis Suarez case that opened a deep rift between the two clubs.

Suarez, who received an eight-match ban after an independent FA commission found him guilty of racially abusing the Frenchman, watched on from the stands with his family and celebrated the winning goal wildly.

Evra received predictably vociferous jeers whenever he touched the ball, and one fan was pictured making a monkey gesture.

It was unfortunate that he should end up committing a vital error, though he is joined in the United dog house by De Gea who had a miserable afternoon.

He Spaniard is a talented 21-year-old with a bright future, but at present he is a liability on set pieces.

He is indecisive when coming for the ball, a hesitant puncher and too seldom assets himself physically.

Liverpool targeted this weakness, but placing a crowd of players, including Andy Carroll, in front of De Gea on corners.

The move paid dividends when Gerrard delivered from the left on 21 minutes. The goalkeeper, preoccupied with Carroll, found himself caught in no-man's land and Agger planted a firm header into the net - grazing the top of De Gea's head en route.

Thereafter, De Gea was a nervous wreck, spilling simple catches, misplacing passes and appearing terrified by Carroll. Anders Lindegaard can expect to return to the United goal against Stoke on Tuesday.

However, having taken the initiative, Liverpool immediately surrendered it, dropping deeper and deeper in an attempt to cut out United's passing lanes.

Initially it worked, with United unable to turn ample possession into chances - Wayne Rooney missed out having not trained all week after picking up an injury at Arsenal last Sunday.

However, they broke through when Rafael ran onto an Antonio Valencia flick, beat Jose Enrique and crossed low for Park, who made true contact and sent his first-time shot past Reina into the bottom-right corner.

United continued to control the game in midfield thanks to fine performances from Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes.

Both had completed 100 passes by the time the exhausted Scholes went off 15 minutes from time.

But the introduction of Javier Hernandez backfired as Liverpool started to control the midfield battle.

Kuyt failed to get sufficient power on a header from a Jose Enrique cross but the warning signs were there.

Then, two minutes from time, United crumbled in seemingly innocuous circumstances. Carroll got his head to a booming clearance but there should have been no imminent danger.

However, Evra lagged and Kuyt was through on goal - the shot was close to De Gea but had enough power to beat the beleaguered goalkeeper.

The reverberations were felt across the North-West. Is King Kenny really bringing the glory days back to Anfield?

  1. Dont ye just love the pathetic MANURE coming on here and vomiting their bile and diarrhea and making up excuses for been well and truly been dumped out of the FA Cup, its all sad excuses for another humiliation by LIVERPOOL , I can imagine if MANURE beat anyone else even if the opposition were down to 6 or 7 players they would still crow about it and brag as only their large mouth pieces can, SORE LOSERS OR WHAT !

The large expensive donkey transformed himself into a winged Pegasus and soared majestically to flick the ball on to a on running Kuyt who kicked the ball as close as he could at De Gea to give him a chance who fell on his backside and let the ball roll past him Goaaaaaaal and all the Manc nomads went crawling back into their holes.

  5. Welbeck was a constant threat, everytime the ball went near him, My heart was in My mouth.........HA HA. I looked at the team sheet, no Rooney, no Nani - no chance, and they've not exactly been ripping trees up. Where did UTD think the threat would come from? And when I saw De Gea, well, say no more. We were quite poor, I thought, so what does that say about UTD? and We'd just beat Citeh mid-week, you know, the team that scored SIX at Old Toilet, so were perhaps a bit tired, never mind Boys, You've still got the Channel 5 Cup.......waaaayyy.....

  6. all your keeper had to do was tell his defenders to get out of the box an give him some room.
anything in the six yard box should be his...our players either foul him or get knocked-out by him....simple
(or at least that's what should be happenin if you're a half decent keeper.)

its funny how when liverpool fans agree we must be 'dogging duo's'. what goes on in your weird head to think that?..... perhaps your nose is too near your own arse.
at no time have i said, or even implied that man utd bribe refs.
at no time have i said we will win the league before every season.
no liverpool fan has ever said the league cup is the best trophy in the world. (though you only have to look around the threads to read utd fans who now think its a mickey mouse one)
and utd has in no way, shape or form humiliated liverpoool. see, we've won all the big cups in that twenty years apart from the PL.
getting relegated to the second div whilst your rivals are dominating european football....that's humiliation, kidder.
apart from that.............well done with your post.
(you now look even more ridiculous than you did three hours ago.)

Playing at home ... Stuff 10 men behind the ball ... Hoof the ball up field to the expensive large donkey (who resembles Heskey more and more each game) ... Try and win corners ... Surround and intimidate keeper ... Start again.
Impressive tactics, which is why you're so far behind in the league

Rogo and arfurtime - the Klanfield gay dogging duo - before the season starts, they boast how they're going to win the league whereas United will be nowhere/relegated. Then, as the season progresses, they reckon they've been unlucky whilst United are at the top because they've somehow secretly bribed all the refs, then realisation hits and they suss that united are still in there fighting for the top spot, whereas Liverfool are looking like no hopers for a top four place.
What a joke you 2 are.
The one time that United didn't win the Premiership in the last 5 years, we won the Carling Cup which, at that time, you called Mickey Mouse. Now, all of a sudden, it's the best trophy in the world. Haven't you noticed that the decent clubs like United, Arsenal and Chelsea give their reserves a run, rather than fight for a place against Cardiff with their first team ?
United dominate and humiliate Liverfool for 20 glorious years and the Scamfield faithful are still there clinging to a life raft after the ship has sunk ;-)
