Japan's Daiki Ito finally claimed his maiden FIS Ski Jumping World Cup victory at his home leg in Sapporo.

FIS World Cup Ski Jumping in Sapporo winner Daiki Ito of Japan (C) holds the winning cup with second placed Anders Bardal of Norway (L) and third placed Kamil Stoch of Poland at the Okurayama Jumping Hill in Sapporo - 0

The 26-year-old has been threatening to top the podium for much of the season but just falling short with two silver medals and a bronze as the Austrians dominate.

However he had it his way at long last in his home country, taking gold with leaps of 134m and 130m to end with an overall total of 252.6 points.

That gave him gold by the narrowest of margins though with Norwegian Anders Bardal settling for silver with 252.5 in total despite better jumps of 134m and 135m.

Poland’s Kamil Stoch, who took gold last time out in Zakopane, completed the podium in third with 247.2 points ahead of Bardal’s teammate Vegard Haukoe Sklett.

And with Gregor Schlierenzauer absent, fellow Austrian leader Andreas Kofler extended his lead at the top of the World Cup standings with a ninth-place finish.

He now has 934 points to his name for a healthy lead of 45 points ahead of Norwegian Bardal who move up to second overall with his silver medal performance.
