Dirk Kuyt hit the late winner as Liverpool gained revenge for their FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United a year ago courtesy of a 2-1 win.
Off-field matters had dominated pre-match proceedings as both sides tried to ease tensions ahead of the first meeting of the two sides since Luis Suarez's eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.
But while there was plenty of animosity in the ground between rival fans, the match itself, somewhat unusually, contained very few flashpoints.
With Suarez still banned, Evra became the focal point, and it was his failure to get to Andy Carroll's flick-on first that put Kuyt through to fire the clincher in the 88th minute.
Prior to that it appeared the tie was heading towards a replay neither manager really wanted. After Antonio Valencia hit the post for the visitors, Daniel Agger headed Steven Gerrard's corner home in the 21st minute.
But Park Ji-sung levelled matters just before half-time with a fine finish from Rafael's cross, although his effort ultimately proved in vain.

Great goal by Kuyt ha ha ha :-)
i think a minutes silence is in order to mark the passing of the once great manchester yoonited .
I was pleased there was no trouble, I'd rather talk about football. I thought Manchester United were the better team for most of the game and deserved a draw.Even Dalglish and Gerrard said so after the game.
It just keeps , better and better and better. Man U won't win a thing this year. King Kenny's plan is taking shape. Welcome back very soon Suarez great to see the joy on your face today. Justice is a wonderful thing.
Now all eyes and cameras will be on Man/u supporters when Suarez arrives there next week. Can't wait for that one.Evra was responsible for the second goal for Liverpool he was rubbish..Suarez is heading for Old Trafford on a mission..Bring it on..City make sure you don't slip up..
