Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was at a loss to explain how his side failed to earn at least a replay against Brighton in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Will Buckley's deflected drive was enough to snatch the Seagulls a late victory.
Pardew named his strongest available line-up with only skipper Fabricio Coloccini missing after he failed to recover from a groin injury. But their best chance fell to Leon Best, who planted a free header over the crossbar in the first half, while Albion goalkeeper Peter Brezovan denied Shola Ameobi after the break.
"We were unfortunate for the goal," said Pardew. "He skipped past Danny (Guthrie), who had just been booked, and then it was a deflection with the only shot they had of any threat.
"I felt the attitude and commitment was good but we didn't produce a moment. Besty had two good chances, and their keeper did well. Brighton are very good at pulling teams around and moving the ball, but they didn't do that in this game, they dug in and nicked a goal on the break.
"That's credit to them, but we are scratching our heads at how we haven't come back with at least a draw."

It's time to go to spec savers because you must be the only one that didn't see the two problems up front
The TOON went doon to Brighton
It was a saterday night
But Leon Best & Shola
Were both a load of shyte
With no goals in the team
We never had a chance
Shola & Leon are donkeys
Send them off to France !
We got what we deserved, nowt Mr Pardew, FFS get shot of Best & Ameobi, they are League 1 quality if that !
You take away Demba Ba's goals this season, or say his knee injury had kicked in & where would we be ? Yeah right, staring relegation in the face while Leon & Shola go out for an afternoon stroll in the park aghhhhhhhhhh
mr pardew, Newcastle lost because you insist on starting a pair of dead-beat "strikers". Namely leon best & shola ameobi. They are simply unable (or unwilling) to score a goal between them most match days. Lazy is a word that also comes to mind when describing their performances.
Haaaaaaaaaa Ha ha ha ha !!!!!!!
oh dearie dearie me twas plain for all to see
the poor old skunk were truly sunk
at brighton by the sea.
Josephine...we are where we are in the league because we deserve it...the league does not lie!!
just read daily mirror mr pardew says he is going to rest his star players and concentrate on the F A CUP HA HA we all no what happened next lets all lagh at the scunks again F T M
to the manager who doesnt know why they lost - You lost because you were second best on the day, No guts, no grit, not enough skill, nearly men in front of goal. (you get nothing for nearly scoring). They should be able to outplay a Champions league team but didnt - that why you lost. never mind there is always next season - sad thing is been saying that for years now.
football thickos
all gay saddos
bob r sole told you brighton would win ftm
jonny who's crying now sad mag ftm
the mighty mags are a joke side with out ba ba just a 1 man team ftm
Blobby, as the song goes, "You're shyte and you know you are", remember when we got beat by Brighton,( at least we went to extra time and without a striker), all the abuse you hurled at us, well its your turn now, you are garbage, how on earth are NUFC in that position in the league.?
If Pardew you thinks you deserved more he's deffo caught the deluded bug off you lot !! Luv It !!!!
Sleepy-Jazz, Ba, Cisse and Tiote were not "available" but, Lovenkrands was and when your front two are cruising through games having no effect at all, why not take a punt.
What difference was Gosling going to make as with Perch in the Fulham game. It was clear in both games that Shola and Best were not going to do anything so out of the three subs in both games, why did Pardew not bring on Lovenkrands, why did Pardew put him on the bench if he doesn't think he could do a better job then our front two have done??
we got exactly what we deserved again, nowt the quicker we get the strikers back and tiote the better
"strongest available line-up with only skipper Fabricio Coloccini missing after he failed to recover from a groin injury."
Incorrect reporting... Ba, Cisse, and Tiote were all missing
As disappointed as I am that we didn't win, I certainly didn't want a draw. The last thing we need right now is another match to play. Lets hope the two "Demba's" come back firing all on cylinders.
FFS man why persist with Shola.
What's the deal!
Anyway, to be honest i was more upset at losing to Fulham than i was yesterday. To me, 3 points are more valuable than winning a round of a Cup competition that if truth be known, we had zero chance of winning - we are not good enough and we also carry little luck. Hopefully on Wednesday we will have our 2 proper strikers back, along with Colo so things could be worse,
Come on the Boro.
Well done the mighty Brighton & Hove Albion, Pardew is dellusional the Newcastle team deserved nothing and got nothing pure and simple. Man Citeh and Utd wiped out by Liverpool, NUFC dumped out of the Cup and if SAFC can beat the smoggies it will round off a perfect week. C'mon the Black Cats
