Mills leaves Gigg Lane boardroom

Thu 28 Feb, 06:45 PM

Bury director Iain Mills has resigned his position on the League Two club's board following a series of complaints about his matchday attire.Mills - who weighs over 21 stone - wears shorts to every game and has refused to conform to the traditional boardroom dress of shirt, tie and suit.

A statement from Bury said: "The board have received a number of complaints about the fact that he wears shorts and it is putting the board in an embarrassing position, which Iain feels is not to the best interests of the club."

Mills joined the cash-strapped club in 2003, a year after his sons, Steven and Gordon, won a 'Live The Dream' auction, which entitled them to a full year as an official Bury player.

An ardent Shakers fan, Mills will now relinquish his position as director.

Mills, who runs his own care homes, said: "Put me in a pair of shorts and I'm as happy as a pig in mud."

Mills added: "I wear shorts no matter what the weather and I actually prefer it when it's cold.

"On the rare occasions that I do wear a suit, the sweat just pours out of me.

"I've only got very little legs and my shorts look like they're longer than they actually are.

"But there are obviously certain individuals who want to make an issue of it.

"It feels like we are back living in Victorian ages and is totally ridiculous.

"However, the directors are in a very awkward position and the club is far bigger than any individual."
