Arsenal have reacted angrily after midfielder Aaron Ramsey suffered a serious injury that echoed the broken leg sustained by team-mate Eduardo da Silva in 2008.
The Welshman appeared to have his lower leg broken in a tackle with Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross, who was shown a red card by referee Peter Walton.
Shawcross left the field in tears, while players from both sides were visibly traumatised as medics administered emergency treatment and gave Ramsey oxygen.
The game was stopped for several minutes before Ramsey was stretchered into an ambulance and driven away from the Britannia Stadium.
Sky television decided not to show replays of the challenge because they considered the footage to be too upsetting.
Manager Arsene Wenger said the injury was a consequence of the excessively physical approach teams take against his side.
"The only thing is we do not know how long he will be out, but it is certainly long term," he said.
"I'm not very happy with the tackle. I just want to say we know what we are expecting, a battle everywhere.
"But we have now lost three players -- (Abou) Diaby, Eduardo and now Ramsey today, a boy of 19 years old to horrendous tackles.
"The first two were out for nine months to a year, and I don't believe in coincidence when you suffer this as many times as we do.
"When you see a player get injured like he (Ramsey) did tonight, its not acceptable."
Stoke manager Tony Pulis said he was "desperately upset" as well, adding: "Ryan has no malice in him at all, he is a young kiddie and he was crying his eyes out as he went off the pitch.
"He will be devastated. There is no way in a million years he would set out to do that to any player.
"Our thoughts go out to Aaron and everyone connected to Arsenal Football Club."
"There was absolutely no malice in the challenge. I would never, ever go out to hurt a fellow professional," Shawcross later said on the club's website.
"I am deeply upset that Aaron has suffered such a bad injury and my thoughts are with him. I would like to send him my best wishes too for a speedy recovery."
Arsenal went on to win the game 3-1 with goals from Nicklas Bendtner, Cesc Fabregas and Thomas Vermaelen after Danny Pugh opened the scoring for Stoke.
Speaking after the game, Fabregas called for referees to stamp out on dangerous challenges, saying: "You could say we are not protected enough. I think so."
Croatian striker Eduardo missed nearly a year with a compound leg fracture following a tackle by Birmingham City's Martin Taylor in 2008. Diaby was injured after a challenge by Sunderland's Dan Smith two years earlier.

aresnal/wenger are paranoid - because they have a reputation of being the dirtiest team
jason your clearly not football fan.stick to countdown,no one likes a smartarse
I WONDER IF PEOPLE WILL BE SO UNDERSTANDING IF IT WAS ROONEY OR STEVE G THAT THE STOKE BLOKE BROKE HIS LEG. THE PRESS AND THE WHOLE ENGLISH PUBLIC WON'T BE VERY UNDERSTANDING. BUT, HEY! IT WAS RAMSEY AND ARSENAL SO ITS NOT THAT BAD.
FOR PEOPLE ATTACKING ARSENE WENGER, YOU GUYS MOST BE STUPID. THIS IS A MAN THAT IN THE PAST 4 YRS HAS WITNESSED THREE OF HIS PLAYERS GOT THEIR LEGS BROKEN. SIR ALEX HAS BEEN MANAGING IN THE PL FOR MORE THAN 20 YRS AND I DON'T THINK HE HAS GOT THAT KIND OF RECORD WITH HIS PLAYERS. OF COURSE, WENGER HAS GOT EVERY RIGHT TO BE ANGRY BECAUSE ITS NO LONGER A COINCIDENCE.
THE STOKE BLOKE MAY NOT HAVE ANY INENTION TO BREAK RAMSEY'S LEG BUT AT THE SAME TIME HE KNEW WHEN HE WAS GOING FOR THE TACKLE THAT IT WAS A BAD ONE THAT MIGHT INJURE RAMSEY. SO, LETS NOT MAKE HIM OUT AS THE VICTIM BECAUSE THE ONLY VICTIM IN THIS WHOLE HORRIBLE SITUATION IS LYING IN THE HOSPITAL WITH PAINS AND FEAR OF HIS FUTURE. THE STOKE BLOKE WILL CONTINUE WITH HIS CAREER, HE HAS EVEN BEING CALLED UP TO THE NATIONAL TEAM. HE MAY STILL GO TO THE WORLD CUP WHILE POOR RAMSEY AND ARSENAL WILL BE BEARING THE SCARE OF THIS INCIDENT FOR MONTHS TO COME.
...er, a PS for the more sedate pub quiz later on: actually, it's 'pidgin', not 'pidgen'! tee-hee! :)
i have never commented on this site but have read it quite often.i think that shawcross is unlucky 2 be sent off it was only when the ref saw the poor lads leg that he got out the red card.i feel sad 4 both parties ,1 for young ramsy who i hope 2 see back on the field playing asap(even though im a man u fan)and 4 shawcross, who i think has played himself into a world cup place and who as never been sent off in his career can recover 2 because ,unlike the edwardo challenge which i feel was much worse, showed no real remorse from taylor. That definately was a red card and what happened 2 him? He's now playing on loan somewhere because of that.Wenger, however, as usual, thinks that he went out 2 hurt him but that's the arse man all over.
Hammer for ever....you're dick....but then again look who you support...not surprising....@#$% head
As a life long Gooner I was devastated that once again one of players was carried off on a stretcher with an apalling injury sustained by a reckless tackle....do I think Shawcross meant to break his leg...NO....does he have past forn YES......WAS IT RECKLESS YES......will most clubs stop us by fair means or foul....cos we 'don't like physical football'....YES....enough said...shame on him...I'm glad he was crying...so he should.....may it haunt him for the rest of his career....as it will Ramsey.....AS FOR MY TEAM..I AM SO PROUD OF THEM...ALL OF THEM......THEY ROSE ABOVE AND DELIVERED....NO CONSOLATION BUT IT SHOWED THEY'RE METTLE..NOW WE JUST NEE TO GET BETTER AT THE REALLY DIRTY STUFF.....ARSENAL TO WIN THE PREM.....WE'VE EARNT IT...LETS GO OUT AND GET IT......
Once again ol' Garlic muncher Wenger thinks the world is against him!!! English football has always been a physical game and if the foriegners can't take it then perhaps Cisy Fatass and Bentkraut should f*** off back to the lands from which they crawled out from and let some English players get on the Gooners team sheet!!!
not a arse fan but did shawcross break jeffers leg and pu him out for 18mths,not a dirty player cough
Arsen Wenger comments regarding the accident to his player Aaron Ramsey were uncalled for. Ryan Shawcross was greatly upset by what happened and one would be foolish to say that it was a deliberate attempt to put anyone out of the game. Be more sporting Arsen and lift yourself above the thoughts that everyone is out to get at Arsenal. Our thoughts are with Aaron Ramsey and it is hoped that he will make a speedy recoverey.
Some players need to be punished brutally by the FA, to eradicate this kind of babaric tackles! Even some car accidents to break and bend ones leg like that...this is why i hate all this small teams, that have no flair, intelligence and technique...just raw aggression, and work rate, the boltons of this world and now stokes...
i was utaly discrased with the tackle that acccured on aaron ramsey i felt sorry for the long lad and hope that such a good player will return as quickly as possible ...
Tolulope, you really should have seen Keane end Haglunds career very deliberately before writing that! That aside your comments are fair ones. It's my beliefe that managers shouldn't be pressed for comments straight after a match, Wenger's been caught out like this before. It's emotional enough if it's just a game of football being talked about, let alone such a horrendous injury. Add to that that English is not his first language, and you get comments being made that allow scorn to be thrown at him, when in actual fact what he was saying was pretty restrained and reasonable. Okay I'm prepared to bet that when Tony Pullis, or Sam Alladyce, or Steve Bruce etc etc give their prematch team talk when playing Arsenal they say essentially this. "Let them know you're there from the first whistle", "get the ball, but follow through and soften them up", "keep tight hammer them as soon as they're in possession"... we all know they don't like t hard, so give it to them hard... And that's what every lesser team has done since Mark Hughs worked out the tactics a few years back at Blackburn. Referees have allowed this to pass un penalised. This ups the anti unfortunately. This atmosphere of machismo leads to Ramsey in hospital. Without the pressure to be hard Shawcross would have choked back on that tackle. It would never have happened. If refs penalised it, managers wouldn't brief their teams to do it. My no means was that a mega bad tackle, but the ball was lost, there was no need for a tackle at all. IT WAS INTENDED AS PART OF THE SOFTENING UP PROCESS, NOT TO MAIME, but maime it has. Pullis is a thug manager without the humility to accept his part in this scenario. I've heard people say, "what should teams do then? Try and play football and get thrashed?" Answer is "Yes!" If not, why not use weapons? Attack dogs? Within the actual laws Arsenal are better, you can't change the
iTS A TERRIBLE SHAME AND I JUST HOPE HE GETS BETTER SOON.
I was born to witness the most entertaining game played with such finesses that your stuck up with teams like Arsenal. Football is all about fair play. Serious actions should be taken about such dangerous tackles. Ramsey, I wish you a quick recovery. Gunners 4 life.
@828..........i think you need to calm down, i do play football funnily enough and have witnessed incidents similar to this, so you can retract that.
With reference to your daft comment....."Arsenal have suffered 3 broken legs since 2006, tell me another team to have that??"
I think as someone else pointed out on here, Liverpool suffered quite a few within a lesser time frame....Warnock, Carragher and Cisse (would have included Baros but think his was an ankle?). So grow up and stop believing this only happens to Arsenal you idiot.
tolulope......well said and full respect to you.
WR Arsenal fan

I have to take issue with those people who keep referring to football as a MANS GAME.
It is my view that football and the players are now commodities to be bought and sold on the whims of ruthless businessmen.
The kind of money invested in players is the reason why AARON RAMSEY will be seen by these parasites as an investment lost.
The fact that this very talented player may lose his career is a secondary issue to these people.
If i was working for any of the football clubs involoved,You would hear their lawyers pens rattling right now.
Our once beatiful game is being reduced to no more than just a side show for those people who seek to exploit players like AARON RAMSEY.
I just hope his recovery is as successful as EDUARDOS.
I am an Arsenal fan, and hold no grudge with Shawcross. It is obvious there was no malice in the tackle and it is just a freak accident. I imagine he feels like crap today over what happened. Hope Aaron makes a complete recovery.
