AZ and Van Gaal agree to part company

Fri 28 Mar, 11:00 PM

AZ Alkmaar president Dirk Scheringa has announced coach Louis van Gaal will leave the club at the end of the season. The former Holland boss took charge at AZ in 2005 and narrowly saw his side miss out on the Eredivisie title last season, finishing three points behind champions PSV Eindhoven.

However, the team has struggled this campaign and currently lie 12th in the table, six points above the relegation zone.

After much deliberation, Scheringa revealed he made the decision to part with his coach earlier this week.

"I have always said that I would never fire Van Gaal, but it didn't work anymore," he said.

"The last few months it has looked as though time has stood still. That's why we, as the board of the club, decided to part ways on July 1."

Scheringa claimed that Van Gaal had agreed with the decision of the board, despite many of the players revealing their disappointment the 56-year-old coach will leave.

"It's a mutual agreement. It looked to us that it was better to go our own way as of July 1. Louis even didn't want compensation because of the bad results," Scheringa said.

"This is a strange situation. When I called Van Gaal a few minutes ago, he was really proud. It doesn't happen a lot that players want a coach to stay on."
