There weren't any major upsets in the , but Western Kentucky and West Virginia came mighty close.
Trailing by 18 at one point during their match-up with third-ranked Xavier, seventh-ranked West Virginia came back to take the game to overtime. West Virginia then took a six point lead in the extra period, before two monster three pointers by Xavier's BJ Raymond and a clutch free throw by Stanley Burrell made sure that the Musketeers would away with a 79-75 victory.
On paper, 12th ranked Western Kentucky shouldn't have lived on the court with top-ranked UCLA. Down 21 at half-time, Western Kentucky fans could have been forgiven for going home. However, they would have missed a great comeback, as Tyrone Brazelton's 25 points took the Hilltoppers came to within four points of an unlikely lead. However, a late rush of points by UCLA made sure of a 88-78 victory. UCLA were led by 29 points by talisman Kevin Love, but they'll have to play a lot better if they want to get through the Elite Eight.
Third-ranked Louisville was red hot throughout their game with Tennessee, coming away with a 79-60 victory over the second-ranked Vols. The win - which gave Cardinals coach Rick Pitino his 13th straight victory over Tennessee - was led by Earl Clark's 17 point burst and some great defence, which forced Tennessee into 17 turnovers and only 25% from the three-point lead.
However, there were absolutely no problems for top-ranked North Carolina, who crushed Washington State 68-47. The Tar Heels stifled their Pac-10 opponents, holding them to only 32 per cent shooting. Tyler Hansborough came through a woeful first half to score 16 in the second period and end up with 18 points, although Danny Green also had a strong night with 15.
