Doncaster moved to within two points of an automatic promotion place in Coca-Cola League One with a 1-0 win over third-placed Nottingham Forest on Friday night.

The victory came courtesy of Gareth Roberts' 74th-minute free-kick and virtually ended Forest's hopes of going up automatically.

It was a fully-deserved win for the hosts, with Forest goalkeeper Paul Smith keeping the score down with a string of fine saves. He made particularly good saves from Jason Price and Brian Stock in the first half.

Lewis McGugan missed Forest's best chance from close range before Roberts drilled a low 20-yard free-kick through the defensive wall and in off the inside of Smith's post.

Tranmere beat Swindon 2-1 in the night's other game, moving into the play-off places in the process.

Steve Jennings found the target after 11 minutes from Shane Sherriff's through-ball and Chris Greenacre doubled the advantage shortly before the break, the linesman signalling his effort had crossed the line before keeper Peter Brezovan kicked clear.

Billy Paynter reduced the deficit on 68 minutes but Swindon were unable to find an equaliser.
