Tim Cahill will miss the rest of Everton's season as a result of a broken metatarsal.
The Australian international midfielder sustained the injury during Saturday's Premier League game with West Ham United - and was withdrawn after just 10 minutes.
Cahill has scored 10 times this season, driving David Moyes' team into serious contention for Champions League qualification.
But the Everton manager will now have to cope without his star midfielder for the remainder of the campaign - starting with a crunch clash against Merseyside rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
Moyes remained philosophical, however: "It is disappointing but it happens," he said.
It is yet to be decided whether Cahill will undergo surgery.
