Downing calls for Robins fan power

Mon 28 Apr, 02:45 PM

Cheltenham manager Keith Downing believes their supporters will play a key role in Saturday's crunch clash with Doncaster at Whaddon Road. The Robins require a win to guarantee their League One status next season while only a victory will guarantee Rovers the second automatic spot in League One with Nottingham Forest breathing down their necks.

Downing has urged Town fans to become their 12th man for the all-ticket affair, for which no tickets will be available on the day of the game.

"We need the supporters to bring as many people along as they can," he said. "It would be fantastic if just for one day people who don't normally come could be interested in their football team. For the regulars it's a massive game for us all.

"We've come so far and we now need the crowd to become a 12th man. I know that's a cliche but Doncaster will be bringing 1,600 supporters and they will create a fantastic atmosphere so we need to be louder than them and to out-sing them.

"Any time it goes quiet or at any moment in the game when perhaps there is a lapse or disappointment we need the crowd to continue being as loud as possible. That will provide massive encouragement to our players on the field. They will be built up as always but it is extra important for this game to keep lifting them and get behind them from 3pm to 5pm."
