ATP Tour - Fantasy Tennis: Where's Rafa?

Eurosport - Mon, 28 Apr 07:19:00 2008

Ah, the rare claycourt tournament that Rafael Nadal has no chance of winning offers a refreshing change in this week's Fantasy Tennis picks.

2008 Monte Carlo Masters Series Rafael Nadal - 0

As always, we humbly offer our tips on players set to compete in this week's event who could be worth picking with your two weekly transfers, hopefully giving you an edge over your rivals.

Remember you can still join the game and play against your friends, family and colleagues in a mini-League. Click on the link on the right to join up!

Group A

In: Fernando Gonzalez

Why, you might ask, is Rafael Nadal - with his one loss on clay in the last three years - not the one and only name to top this list during the course of the entire claycourt season? Simple answer, he's going to defend his title in Barcelona rather than participating in this week's Munich Open. So your only top tier choice this week - if you're willing to use a transfer on him - is Gonzo. The Chilean has an undefeated 5-0 record with one title on clay already this season, but he might not be worth making a move for considering you're going to want to definitely dump him for Rafa at next week's tournament in Rome.

Out: Richard Gasquet

The Frenchman would have been our pick for the in after a third-round showing at the Monte Carlo Masters, but he dropped out of the event after suffering a loss in Monaco to world number 50 Sam Querrey.

Group B

In: Paul-Henri Mathieu

The top seed in Munich has earned his world number 12 position in the ATP rankings this year with some incredibly consistent results in Melbourne, Marseille, and Miami. All that's been missing for the M-loving Mathieu has been a final appearance. Though he may not make it into the last round at this event, Mathieu proved his claycourt credentials last year with a pair of titles and is a strong contender to reach at least the semis.

Out: Tommy Haas

If you're a big fan of the Tommy-nator and hopeful that the former world number two is right on the cusp of turning his career back around on home soil, be advised that he is not. His form may have picked up with a quarter-final appearance at Indian Wells - including an upset of Andy Murray - last month. But Haas is clearly still wary over his recurring shoulder injury after pulling out of Germany's Davis Cup tie with Russia, and his recent record in Munich is less than impressive with two first-round exits in the last two years.

Group C

In: Philipp Kohlschreiber

The defending champion has a very good looking draw through to the semi-finals, and after a strong showing at the Monte Carlo Masters he should be more than ready to contend a second Tier event on home soil. The German already has one title this year and now that the clay season has arrived look for him to add to that collection sooner rather than later.

Out: Gael Monfils

The Frenchman has one of the worst imaginable first-round draws against Russian claycourt specialist Igor Andreev. Despite a decent showing in Monte Carlo, where he reached the third round before falling to Roger Federer, don't expect much from the former Roland Garros junior champion.

Group D

In: Marc Gicquel

Despite a difficult draw we're going to re-recommend the 31-year-old Frenchman who worked wonders for us two weeks ago with a quarter-finals appearance in Estoril. The fourth-most effective player in the group (152 fantasy points) is only the seventh-most popular. Look for both of those positions to climb during the claycourt season.

Out: Marin Cilic

Despite a very strong start to the season for the big Croatian teenager, Cilic has yet to have much claycourt success at the International Series level on the slow dirt. In Munich Cilic should do little to improve on his 3-6 professional record on clay.
