Carlos Sainz held off Mitsubishi's Stephane Peterhansel to win the Central Europe Rally.

Former world rally champion Sainz held an 18 second lead in his Volkswagen entering the final day and made sure of victory by winning the last special.

Frenchman Peterhansel made a navigational mistake at the start of the special and lost close to a minute as a result.

The King of the Dakar eventually finished 2:01 behind Sainz with young German Dieter Depping (VW) holding off Luc Alphand (Mitsubishi) for third.

Portugal's Carlos Sousa (VW) and Frenchman Bruno Saby (BMW) followed with eighth placed Philippe Gache winning the two-wheel drive buggy category.

There was less suspense in the bikes where David Casteu controlled the final stage to claim victory.

The Nice rider came third on the stage on his KTM as he finished 2:58 ahead of Chilean Francisco Lopez.

Third place in the final standings, 19:39 behind the winner, went to Alain Duclos as compatriot and 2007 Dakar winner Cyril Despres suffered a fuel problem on the final stage and slumped to fifth, one place behind the winner of the 450 category, Spaniard Jose Manuel Pellicer (Yamaha).

Frenchman Hubert Deltrieu completed victory in the quads by a massive 28:52 from Christophe Declerck and in the trucks Dutchman Hans Stacey claimed outright victory by a margin of 33:43 from compatriot Wulfert Van Ginkel.
