Premier League - Shearer: 'It's out of our hands'

Eurosport - Tue, 28 Apr 14:46:00 2009

Newcastle United boss Alan Shearer has admitted that Premier League survival is out of their hands after dropping another two points, at home to Portsmouth.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Newcastle United Newcastle-Portsmouth Shearer - 0

"I really don't know what is going to be enough to stay up, Shearer said after the goalless draw at St James' Park. "I would dearly love to think we could go (to Liverpool) and get something - we will be trying to do that - but I really don't know, I can't tell you.

"I don't know what is going to be enough to stay up."

Shearer took the bold move to start with a triple-pronged strike force of Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins and Mark Viduka.

All three missed excellent chances to score, an irony not lost on the former England and Newcastle striker.

"It's ironic, really, the three players that I wanted up there all had one very good chance each and you would expect at least one of those to go in, he added.

"We are relying on other people. Results went for us at the weekend, apart from the Blackburn one.

"It's going to be a tense end to the season, we all know that. The way the season has gone tells us that this year.

"We have got to make sure we are still in there fighting come the second last, come the last game of the season.

"We have got to make sure we are in there fighting."

  1. on the subject of managers for newcastle, once the shock of the drop is over.any new possible creditable manager will immediately be put off,the reason, the fans ridiculous immediate expectations.longevity will ensure success at newcastle, but who will want the abuse and critisizmn"whoops"that will be forthcoming from those who proport to be fans.experience is required here, not a demigod explayer looking for a nice pension.or a messiah or chat show host.newcastle united needs to go back to its roots, turf out the glamour boys and instill respect and honour even when loseing, pride from the players and the will to win must take precidence.venables, morinho, keane,"who do you think could do the job".!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. bobr,i take your point, but ashley is already a hugely succesfull business man,and obviously knows his stuff,i find it hard or even impossible to believe that ashley failed or did not consult the relative managers of newcastle united.sir bob was a bit before this time, and he was treated badly, and yes by the fans who were not happy with newcastles position ,i believe top 6,so he was shoved.the question is "who rules"the fans ,the manager, the staff,eh who!the owner must be somewhere surely,or does he sit back and drink his beer in the stands with the shirt. They know who the boss is at chelsea, dont they,or is this a weak comparison, there again we know who the boss is at manu.very different situations, anyway bobr you are entiteled to your opinion and i respect that, however i stand by what i say and it would be interesting to have decent comment from other users on this site.

  4. Read my point barry. Players were bought and sold without Robson or Keegan's knowledge. Where else has that happened? Businesses go bust as soon as the owners start thinking they know more than the experts they employ about particular aspects of the business.

  5. bobr Arrogant players, the manager cannot be a manager if the dressing room rules now,can it.you telling me keegan could not control the players.the owner, being the owner can do what he likes after all its his money.keegan should have waited for a suitable replacement, you know like giving notice, not walking out knowing you were leaving a pile of,excuse me,mess behind you, keegan judged correctly that this would cause the maximum damage, and boost his ego no end.he betrayed the fans and the club by these actions.

  6. Milner was sold from under him, poor quality players were brought in without his knowledge, Keegan had to make a stand. When Sir Bobby was in charge a similar thing happened with Speed being sold and others being brought in without his knowledge, arrogant players lost respect for Robson and this led to his sacking. The problem with the club has always been the owners who all seem to think they know better than experienced coaches who've played the game at the highest (international) level.

  7. bob r,precisely my point,by issuing the ultimatum, like say,to your boss, what would you expect your boss to do.keegans ultimatum was unjust and insubordinate, not i repeat not to the benefit of this fine club,he got his knickers in a twist, and was unable to back down, therafore it was his own interest, pride if you like, not newcastles great football history, not all the supporters going way back, yes keegans bloody pride!!!!!!!!!!

  8. All Keegan asked for was a left back. One could've been picked up for a couple of million, instead we got Xisco???? How can you fight that sort of incompetence? Keegan issued an ultimatum him or Wise and Ashley chose Wise. How could he back track without losing the respect of the players and staff?

  9. ime sorry to say that keegan is the catylist for newcastles dillema, instead of walky walkies,he should have fought the internal battle with ashley and wise.by leaving,he knew the huge problems this was to create,Ashley was left with a rather large headache forcing him to take the defensive and trying to defend wise, this man is not used to being rebuked, the resulting decisions were made to defend himself and albeit the club.shearers appointment was made to appease the fans, but this was sadly the wrong move.as much as shearer says his loyalty to newcastle is unparallel,he is too close to the players, which results in a loyalty to them as well, and so instead of making decisions like bring on the hungry kids.he sticks with his pals, the old guard and we all know the result of that.dont we.!!!!!!!

  11. cant see liverpool taking their foot off the gas,can you.the fact is those teams knocking on the door of the premiership have slogged it all season, wheras newcastle like rome believed they were invincible, rome is about to be sacked and the high and mighty senate dragged off to slavery.will the colossium be half empty next season,i wonder.the fans should go on strike and remove nero from his throne.!!!!!!

  15. Cameron. I know things are bad but they have been worse in the last 35 years. What about when Bobby Shinton led the line or more recently when Frank Pingel, George Reilly or Tony Cunningham were our best chances of goals. As for sunderland and Jack I think they will replace Ricky S at the end of the season regardless of whether they go down or not. The lad who manages Wolves has done well, do you fancy giving him a go Jack?

  17. jack, there are no new stories on the safc pages to comment on, that's why there are no NEW comments from NUFC fans - we've exhausted all the articles. As for your reply jack, here you go:
Jack: they weren't booing Shearer and you know it!
I repeat, nobody outside of Shearer could've done any better!
I have banged the drum all season that this NUFC squad is the worst i have ever witnessed in my 35 years of supporting them; there is a saying about not being able to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear etc... - if ever a situation applies, then this is it. You are again letting your prejudices cloud your judgement; to judge Shearer after 4 games of a relegation battle (which in itself is a traumatic experience football-wise) is harsh and unfair. Remember, these are not his players; if he stays on, i wager no more than 2 of these players will remain. Tell me Jack, who would you have brought in, or would you have stayed with the Chuckle Brothers? The damage was done months ago; there is no creativity as Milner and N'Zogbia were never replaced due to ashley's penny-pinching doing iton the cheap mantra. The table does not lie jack, NUFC deserve to be where they are and if they fail to beat a similarly dreadful team in 'the boro', then they deserve to go down. Absolutely no complaints from me; i will add however that they did (for once) at least give their all . . . they're simply not good enough and the fans were truly magnificent (as has been commented on from ALL neutral quarters today . . . . wearside, obviously isn't neutral). I said several weeks ago that hull were the get-out-of-jail team for NUFC and i stand by that; but we now defo need 2 wins from 2 home games and maybe a point at on-the-beach Villa - with this squad, extremely unlikely, but not impossible.
There you go jack, like i said - i will always stand up to be counted.
    ps
have you seen all the nasty stuff on here jack; everybody seems to want to have a snipe at 'small-club' NUFC . . very, very sad!

  18. @65 yeah, that's what it will take to stop them dropping into the lil' league and prevent S'land/Boro slating them for the next 50 years lol. Took charge knowing the situtation, desperate times call for drastic measures..!
